Biting

edited September 2014 in Breastfeeding
Hello all! I look at this board a lot but haven't really posted anything so please forgive me if this question has already been asked 100 times. I have an 11.5 month old who just started getting teeth last week. The first one came through without incidence but the second one just started to break through and LO has started to bite me. I have been gently saying, "no bite, that hurts mommy" and closing my bra for a second or just ending the nursing session. My main problem is that at night while I am nursing her down she used to fall asleep in like 5 min no problem but the last two nights she has been nursing for 4-5 min then instead of falling asleep she starts biting me. Every time I say no bite and close my bra for a second (literally, one second) she starts crying hysterically then won't latch back on. What normally takes 5-10 min at night is now turned into 1.5 hours of her switching off between biting me and crying. She has drawn blood on me 2x today. Anybody ever deal with biting and have another idea?? Please help!

Re: Biting

  • I'm so sorry. My son bit me a few times but I would say ouch and put my boob away. Sounds like you tried that and she's not understanding the correlation between biting and not getting milk. I would continue what you are doing and hopefully she will catch on that biting equals no boobs!
I'm sorry I don't have more advice, just sympathy!

  • It's just a phase. Do not let her on your boob unless she is actively sucking. Unlatch her as soon as she is done sucking. Focus on her, no tv, etc. nurse in a quiet and dark room. See kellymom.com for some good articles.

  • Ugh - mine just started biting this past weekend as well... he has had his 2 bottom teeth for a little over a month, and just started getting his 2 top teeth last week (he's a little over 9 months).  Everything I read said usually your reaction will stop them (putting boob away, shouting out in pain, etc.), but nope, mine thinks its hysterical.  The more I react (ouch!, pull away, etc.), the more he laughs.

And I am running into the same problem... I have nursed him to sleep every night of his life (and naps when I am home), and now it is not working as well.  If he gets bored on the boob he starts to bite so I can't just let him stay on till he sleeps, and he is not falling asleep instantly like he used to.

I have no real advise but I feel your pain (literally), and am interested in what others say.  I have been thinking about doing some sort of sleep training, but every time I go in there he just wants to nurse!
  • Thanks everyone for your response! Sounds like what I am doing is what will stop it so hopefully it does! She has gotten (slightly) better the last 2 days so maybe she is catching on! @AmyG*‌ *‌, thanks for the suggestion I will try that if this doesn't work!! Good luck to all of you with little vampire babies too!!
