I'm a lurker here. I did use clomid but not sure what a clomid challenge is but I would not do anything with an OB. Clomid needs to be monitored with ultrasound. I would only use it if I were being monitored by a RE.
If you scroll down to a post called "Provera, then Period, then clomid, then what?" And read all the responses, it will answer ALL your clomid questions. It was my post from a little less than two weeks ago and boy did I get an education! The gals here are no joke! I wish I could go to them for every question I have in life.

To answer your original question (although I've never done the clomid challenge and I'm sure there are people here who have and can tell you more), it's designed to give you more information about your ovarian reserve than your CD 3 FSH level alone. After establishing CD 3 baselines, you take clomid for several days and test your FSH again (I'm thinking CD 10?) to see how your body responded.
Again, though, I'm sure someone else can give you a better summary.

Basically the important thing about clomid is to have a baseline ultrasound to check for cysts and then a midcycle ultrasound to check your response and lining. It is also necessary for you H to have a sperm analysis and for you to have an HSG to check if your tubes are open prior to getting drugs such as clomid.
