BF and food reactions

My DD is only 2 days old so bf is new. Tonight she got splotchy after I ate I and I fed her. I had pizza and salad. Could the tomato sauce be acidic? I did have pizza while in the hospital and didnt notice this. Just trying to figure out which foods cause common reactions during bf. I have heard dairy for some.

Re: BF and food reactions

  • Congratulations!!

Food allergies can definitely manifest through breastmilk, but I've not heard of or personally experienced food acidity transferring through milk, but I know typically gassy foods can cause gas in baby, so it might be possible. From what I've learned here, Dairy sensitivity most often manifests as blood or mucus in the diaper and sometimes a very fussy baby. It would be very unlikely that baby was getting enough milk at this point to cause a reaction, and I'd be more inclined to say splotchy skin on a two day old is just normal newborn skin and immature circulation. It will not hurt though, to mention it to your pediatrician, when in doubt, especially with something like an allergy concern, always call the Dr.

@casey78‌ is very knowledgeable about allergies and might be willing to chime in here.
