Trouble TTC

Evidently my cervix is "treacherous"

So when I went in for my first IUI last month, my dr had a particularly awful time with the catheter. He had to dilate me and I had a lot of bleeding and tenderness for like two days afterwards making follow up with TI basically impossible. It sucked...a lot. After he did the IUI he told me that if I ever had to have another to remind him to aim for my right shoulder. WTF?

I had my CD 12 u/s today and I had 3 follies 16mm, 15mm, 13mm. I have another u/s scheduled for Thursday and hopefully I'll trigger and be on to IUI #2.

Anyway...I told him today that I was nervous about it because last time was incredibly painful. He said my cervix was mostly closed because I've never had a baby (thanks for the reminder doc) and he basically had to pierce through it. He's hoping that a path is cleared now and this time will be a lot more comfortable for me. I asked him if this could've been a hindrance to our success with TI. He said a very strong "yes"...he said my cervical canal wasn't straight and that a "treacherous cervix can make it very difficult for sperm to find their way."

Great...now that my polycystic ass is finally in ovulating gear I have to throw a cervical labyrinth into the mix! Hopefully things will go smoothly this time and we will be able to add TI back into the mix. Wish me luck!

I had a very similar issue with the catheter for the HSG. That doc never did get the catheter in and just sort of rested it at the opening of the cervix and squirted the dye in from there. It worked. But in his words "you have a very floppy cervix." I asked him if that could be a super power and he looked at me with a very confused expression. I got a giggle out of it though.

     FX for IUI success!

  • Good luck! I will tell you they had some issues putting the catheter during my first IUI, but once they got it through (my uterus dips down) I never had an issue again. It was almost like after they shoved it up whatever "hole" they made stayed open. Also, my RE has told me a million time that my tilted uterus would not be an issue and that the sperm are attracted to the egg once it is released so you would think if they are smart enough to get through a twisted/tilted uterus they would be able to get through an uneven cervix. Good luck, I'll be thinking about you!!!!!!!

    Me: 33, DH: 32

    TTC: 2 years
    Fertility blood tests all normal
    Tilted uterus

    HSG: 11/13/13- tubes open
DH SA: SUPER sperm (145 million, 84% motility, 22% morphology)
All infection disease and immunity blood tests NORMAL

FIRST IUI May 2014: 100 mg Clomid days 5-9, third ultrasound CD 13 revealed four follicles 27, 24 and 20 and 13mm. Trigger shot May 28 with IUI May 29 and 30 (fingers crossed) - BFN started spotting 11DPO :(

IUI #2 B2B 6/23 and 6/24, three mature eggs and 130 million sperm! FX this is the month!  BFN 7/8

3rd cycle benched due to cysts - TI with OPK tests -  BFN

3rd mediated cycle: Clomid+Trigger+TI  (three follies left side, one on right as usual....what the hell right ovary get it together and produce some damn follicles!) 7DPO progesterone level 43 with NO suppositories YAY for a natural strong ovulation. Beta canceled started spotting 13DPO - Third time is not a CHARM! 14 day cycle WTF! Everything looks normal - RE wants to start injectables next cycle so this cycle I'm benched

Officially benched until March....but still plan on trying the baking soda douche due to my excessive and thick CM

  • Ouch, so sorry!

I had the same problem, in fact neither the RE nor the nurse could get the IUI catheter in so I haven't had an IUI yet. The RE ended up surgically opening (cutting through) and then putting in a dilator as it healed for a few days, and supposedly it should be nice and open for IUI this week!

It doesn't sound reasonable at all for the doctor to manually punch through and dilate your cervix every time you get an IUI. Seriously, would he ever consider doing that to a man's penis without anesthesia?? Perhaps you could ask him about a surgical dilation that will last for the future? Or is that kind of what he did last time and hopefully this time will work more easily?

Good luck, I hope both of our upcoming IUIs are as pain free as possible!!

And same here, RE said the cervix issue can be an IF cause.

And seriously, only men would make up terms to describe our bodies such as "treacherous."

How does a full bladder contribute to an easier IUI? That's interesting.

  • I just love y'all! Thank you for your sweet words! After the dr left the room I just gave DH a sideways look and he said, "did he really just say treacherous??" Just such a strange word....

I'm really hoping he's right and this time will be a lot easier. Taking some comfort in y'all's stories!! I really hated not being able to do TI after the last one. We had to do the IUI 28 hrs after trigger so I feel like we really needed to BD cover our bases afterwards but the pain and bleeding were awful.

  • My first IUI was a lot more painful than the next two!  I'm sorry you had to go through it.  The nurse said the first one is normally not as fun because they have to find where your cervix is but after that they make notes as to where to aim.  I hope your next one it better!!

One more thing we have common @AnnaClaire256! (Aside from Hogs and PCOS.) First IUI was definitely the worst. They got the hang of it a bit better after that one. A couple of times my RE has had the nurse push down on my lower abdomen and that seems to help them get it in there.
