Two questions...seeking advice

I have two questions that have come up over the weekend.
I know that shower hostess gifts have already been discussed, but I have a specific situation.  My aunt is the "hostess".  It's at her house and her name is on the invitation.  However, she has a lot of health issues and can't do a lot of work.  My mom told me that her daughters are doing most of the work.  I'm not quite sure what to get for a gift and if I should get gifts for my cousins even though they aren't technically the hostesses.  I would love to get some suggestions from you about this.
My next issue is swollen ankles.  I have not had an issue with this until this weekend.  I was on my feet most of the weekend, and my ankles were quite swollen by the end of each evening.  I am a teacher and only made it to 2nd period today before I noticed any swelling.  I wish I could sit down more to relieve, but it's just not possible for me to still monitor my students especially during labs.  I drink a ton of water a day which I have heard is supposed to help, but is there anything else you know of relieve swelling?

  • I would definitely get gifts for your aunt and your cousins. My SIL's gf did a ton of work for our Dallas shower and I wish I would have known that before the shower. I would've liked to have given her a gift at the same time as my other hostesses. Just decide on a budget and get the most thoughtful (but stress free) gifts within your budget.

  • I would advocate for getting something for your cousins - I am sure they will be surprised by the acknowledgement!  Not sure how much you are interested in spending (or how many of them there are) but perhaps a starbucks, itunes or amazon GC in a thank you card?  Or if there's somewhere you know they all get their nails done, perhaps a gc for a manicure? A bouquet of flowers for your aunt?  There's also a sale at bath & body works (with $1 shipping!) if you have a buffer in terms of time!

Compression socks may help with the swelling!

  • Just to throw another idea, get the aunt something and then get the cousins something else. One of our friends did this for people she knew helped with her bridal shower, so she got them little packages of truffles from a local chocolate place. The hostesses gift was still "special" and the girls loved the thoughtful treat.

  • Compression socks for the swelling and putting your feet up whenever possible during the day are the only things I can think of.

  • Get some compression socks!  They should help.

I have no suggestions on the hostess gift.  I didn't do this when I had my shower 4 years ago.  I had no clue I should have!  And I feel bad now always reading about hostess gifts.

  • I would definitely get your aunt and cousins something.

I too am a teacher. I was put off work about a week ago for the swelling in my feet. Mine have been swelling for the past 3 weeks but have gotten a lot worse in the past week. I have tried everything from the water, to elevation, compression socks, and soaking in tub with Epsom salt. I have found nothing to take it down. As long as your BP is good and you don't have protein in your urine I don't think there is much that can be done. I know how you feel though. I teach MS math and my kids can't be trusted enough for me to sit so the doctor thought it would be best if I just took off until my due date. I would mention it to my doctor next time I go back. Good luck!
  • I have swelling that just showed up this weekend as well. I called my Dr's office and they had me check my blood pressure, which was normal, and told me that swelling in the legs is very normal. They also said if my hands or face was swollen at all to call them right away as that is a symptom of pre-e.
The nurse's advice was to drink tons of water and elevate as much as possible.
