3rd Trimester

Preeclampsia

Getting pretty nervous about my test results tomorrow! Just wondered if anyone has/has had preeclampsia? My dr was very straight forward with me about it possibly leading to seizures in extreme cases but said that we'd just see what the results said and then we'd address the high bp and other symptoms from there...NOW I'M TOTALLY FREAKED OUT.

Just curious of other's experiences.

Re: Preeclampsia

  • I also had severe pre-e and HELLP which developed very suddenly towards the end of my pregnancy. It can lead to seizures which is why they normally will start you on magnesium sulfate as soon as they determine that you have it. What is the doctors reasoning for testing you in the first place?

My SIL ran high BP throughout the end of her pregnancy and it never turned into pre-e. Best of luck to you and I hope that your test results come back normal!

  • I started developing it towards the end of my last pregnancy so doc induced me a week early.  No big deal.  My SIL had SEVERELY high BP / pre-e with her first, and doc induced her 6 WEEKS early.  Not ideal.  Baby was fine and will turn 6 years old next week.  It was scary, but she was in good hands in the NICU.

  • I had pre eclampsia. It lead to an early induction at 36 weeks. Mine was severe to the point that it was determined in half an hr of waiting for the test results that I'd be induced (the moment I required drugs to lower my blood pressure). I went in for my usual growth scan and was wheeled to labor and delivery triage for monitoring and lab draws. There was so much protien in my urine that they were very concerned.

My friend had pre eclampsia which during labor developed into eclampsia and she had a seizure. Scary but she pulled through.

if you have pre eclampsia they'll do 2 things- if it's bad you'll be sent straight to l&d (but if it's bad they send you right there and don't wait on a 24 hr urine catch or anything like that), if it's something of concern then you'll be monitored. You'll see your dr more often and you'll get blood pressure checks 3xs a day sometimes they'll even put you on a drug to help control your blood pressure.

during labor they'll start you on magnesium sulfate (which be prepared it really freaking sucks...you'll feel hot, tired, your body will feel heavy ect) since it makes your body heavy they check your reflexes, breathing and temp often, they'll also continue to ask you about your pre e symptoms (eyesight being the main one).

  • Sorry you have to deal with this. I haven't had to deal with it personally (thankfully) and would say trust your doctors as they know your situation the best, and how severe it is, but I'd also say that if you for whatever reason don't think they are taking it seriously enough (depending on the test results) I might get a second opinion.

A friend's wife died of pre-eclampsia while being treated for it, so I'm much more of an alarmist than others. She had a seizure at home, her husband did everything he was supposed to (e.g., turning her on her side), and she died before the ambulance got there. It's very scary but the reality is that if she had been in the hospital, she probably would have made it, so better safe than sorry. Apologies for being a downer.
