Pregnant after IF

Nervous Intro

Is everyone in this forum scared to make their intro?  I've been holding off, because this intro terrifies me.

We've been TTC for 5+ years now, but only sought help from an RE at the end of 2012.  After testing, several medicated/timed cycles, and several failed IUI's, we did our first IVF cycle this past Spring, with a day 3 transfer on Easter Sunday.  Less than 2 weeks later, I was very surprised to get my first BFP, but the happiness was short lived.  During the first u/s my RE quietly let me know that not only was there no heartbeat, but the development was very behind.  We tracked some very slow progress for the next few weeks, and although we did, eventually see a heartbeat, it was weak, and late, and at this point the yolk sack was far too large and the fetal pole far too small.  At the beginning of May I had a D&C and found the IF forum on tb.

In August, my body was finally ready for IVF#2.  This time, I used Human Growth Hormone (HGH) during stims, and ICSI during fertilization, and these seemed to work, because I made it to a day 5 transfer of 2 good looking blasts on 11-Aug.  I had my beta on 19-Aug, and got my 2nd BFP ever... after which I immediately hopped on a plane to spend a week in Europe for a last minute work trip.  (No stress there).  Because of the trip, it was a full week before my 2nd beta, which showed steady progress.  Still, I was hesitant to intro here.

This morning, I finally had my first u/s.  I was really, really hoping for a strong heartbeat to put my mind at ease, but I didn't get it.  However, I also did not get the "this isn't good" speech from my RE.  Instead, she said that things were measuring on track, and 5w6d is still early.
I did get two, count 'em, two gestational sacks that are apparently not empty, and are about the right size for 5w6d.... according to my RE.  I have my 2nd u/s scheduled for a week from today, and I'm really hoping for the heartbeats then.

Sorry for being so wordy.  I've waited for a while now, but I've finally decided that posting here won't "jinx" my chances.

  • Congrats @AMShark!!  I remember your debate about your work trip from IF and am glad that you got good news before you left. It is not uncommon to not see a heartbeat before 6 weeks, as that just about when the heart starts to beat. Hoping that your next U/S gives you reassurance. :)
  • Congratulations! Unfortunately the worry never goes away, BUT you are on the right track!

  • Yes. I am still too scared for official intro. If all goes well next week at U/S #1 (@ 7 wks) I will intro. All we really have at this point is the whole "think positive" mantra, so I'm trying to go with that. But it's hard. I have everything crossed for you fellow Tropical Ovary that next week's u/s will help you feel more reassured.

  • Perhaps the P in PAIF should stand for Paranoid after IF.  At least I'm not alone, but it's more than a bit off putting to think that I'll never shake this feeling.

@Canuck13 - Tropical Ovaries for life!  I do so love our little group & I'm so heartbroken by the overwhelming amount of BFN's.  I sometimes wonder if that's contributing to my paranoia - the idea that its so crazy that I would be one of a very small list of BFP's from TO.

Lol to Paranoid after IF! And I completely agree with what you've said about the T.O. Group! When I lurked on the July group before my IVF I thought 'wow, this really works...so many women got bfp's' and then our month had so many upsetting bfn's I also wondered how I managed to get so lucky with a bfp on IVF #1. It's definitely harder to hear those girls get disappointing news when we've all been keeping tabs on one another through this.

  • Congrats! For this early I think what you saw is perfect. My RE doesn't do u/s until 7 wks because before there isn't much to see. At 7wks you aren't in limbo anymore, there either is a HB or isn't. Its hard to wait that long though. Hopefully you get to see 2 HBs at your next u/s.
