Today was my older boys' first day of school. When the come home they had a lot of forms for me to fill in (as usual on the first day) At the top of one of the more important forms, the first question asked was what gender does my child identify with. This is the first time in the 6 years of filling out these forms that my childs gender preference was brought to attention, and I think the fact that they acknowledge that gender isn't automatically associated with their sex is real progress.
I do not know if this is common in other area, but this a big step for where we live.
