What are good games for 6yo?

I am gathering ideas for Christmas/DD 6th birthday all which are in a two week span of each other. what are some good games? a lot of games say age 7/8 on them. she loves games and has mastered Uno. I want to get her Checkers. I'd also like to try Clue Jr (Clue was my favorite game) but the reviews on Amazon are terrible. we have scrabble jr and she likes that. usually it is just her and i playing so I assume things like Sorry might not be too fun. any cool strategy games for a 6yo?
Thanks for any ideas!

  • King of Toyko is one of DS's favorites! He also enjoys Life, Trouble, Zingo, and Survive.

  • DS is 5, and he likes checkers.  Trouble is similar to Sorry, but more fun for just 2 players.  He also likes card games.  He almost gets the concept of Battleship, but he usually needs a little help from me.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • DS got Operation, Uno, Connect 4 and Lite Brite for his birthday and loves them all.  I always thought Perfection was a fun game and plan on getting him that for Christmas.

We have Clue Jr., and regular Clue.  Honestly, the window in which my kids could handle a game like Clue Jr. but weren't yet ready for full-fledged Clue was pretty small.

Other games that my kids enjoyed at this age were Sorry, dominoes, and Connect 4 (which I think is actually more fun than checkers.)

ETA: ditto Guess Who?  My kids really loved that game.  Also, traditional card games like Go Fish, Old Maid, memory, etc.

  • Connect 4, Guess Who and trouble are favorites here. Operation, monopoly jr and sorry are also good ones that we enjoy.

  • Others not mentioned:

Sequence - we have the Letters edition. I put the regular "for Kids" one on his wish list. Great for strategy because you have to find a way to get four in a row, but you have little control over your choice of spaces.

Suspend (Melissa & Doug) - probably his favorite game. You have to suspend metal bars on each other, one at time, and try not to make it collapse. (like a mobile) So much fun! I would caution against this for anyone whose child is not a good loser yet, since it is something that comes crashing down. We always have a good laugh when it does.
  • My DS loves Mouse Trap. Other games that we play a lot are Sequence for Kids, connect 4, Tumblin' Monkeys, Trouble, jenga, Zingo, and Spot It.
  • Connect 4 is huge in my house!!!!
