PT mamas come in please

A few weeks ago our PT mentioned that Lucas is over pronating, and if he didn't correct it she would recommend shoe inserts to help him distribute his weight appropriately make him more stable as he moves towards walking. Today she said she thought it was time, and scheduled us for an appointment to get them fitted next week.

They will go down inside his shoes. No one will even see them. I know it's no big deal. But she kept calling them splints, and I don't want him to have special shoes, dammit, and when I got to the car I cried a little even though I was telling my face to knock it off because it was being stupid.

There's not a whole lot of point to this post, I guess. Just, uggghh. Uggghh to one more thing to deal with, and to myself for being stupid about it.

Oh no! Did they say what kind of shoe he needs? We have a friend with a special needs son that needs these as well and said that converse type shoes would be the best to put them in. Those are still cool, right?

It's just an insert that goes down into regular shoes, so it's really not a big deal. That's why it's so stupid that it's bothering me. I didn't expect it to bother me but it is :(

  • :( I hate anything that makes me feel like my kid isn't ordinary. Even though I know he's extraordinary.

I actually just read a review of the shoes that we bought where one woman said it was the only shoe that could be used with inserts. Let me find the review. The shoes are on sale today for $20.

And while it is good to be caught so early, it is still hard.

  • And my therapist said it is particularly important to have a good shoe like stride rite or pediped when first walking, especially for kids who already have delays, so they learn how to properly walk.

Yeah, we've had him barefoot pretty much all the time while walking but I'm going to talk to them more about shoes on Monday.

  • As if you needed something else to deal with. I'm so sorry. I ditto everything @mrads said.

  • Aw, I'm sorry. Your face isn't stupid >:D< You're allowed to cry! Lucas is awesome and I hope the inserts help.
  • I'm so sorry.  While DD is not walking yet I have no child advice.  I personally have to wear them.  My arches are so high that the arch support in shoes do not come close for any support.  (even in birks my arches do not touch the support).  I understand your frustration.  It really limits the shoes that I can wear.  My supports are super big and not flexible.  The best shoe brand I have found that fits them is Keen.  They have removable insoles and they are wider so my toes don't get squished.  (I don't have wide feet).  These shoes are super comfy.  They do make kids sizes and they have rubber over the toes so you don't get scuffed toes.

DD will, when she gets older, have to wear arch supports too since she has my feet.  Don't think of this as a bad thing.  Think of it as a helpful thing.  I was in pain everyday for 2 years before I got mine.

You are a great mama. :)
  • >:D< pp covered it, but I wanted to send you a hug. It is ok to cry.
