I am DROWNING in baby clothes!

edited September 2014 in December 2014 Moms
My mother will not stop buying baby clothes. I have had the talk with her a few times, including the PLEASE STOP, I HAVE NO ROOM, HERE ARE PICS TO PROVE IT talk.
I feel so bad she is spending her money on clothes that can possibly never be worn.

I know there is really nothing I can do but donate it, but MAN.

I know it's messy,  but I was organizing and doing an inventory.
I have 50 receiving blankets, 28 pairs of mittens, 50 hats, 28 bibs, 10 open bottom gowns and 12 sleep sacks. There are easily 200 sleepers, onsies and t-shirts.

/sigh

The toys are not her doing - those are for the daycare kids.

  • If the tags are still on some, can you try returning them and maybe get diapers instead? Or a gift card so you can buy other items you feel you need?

I did this when I got doubles or clothes in the wrong size for the season.  That's a HUGE amount of clothes, want to sell me some sleepers? hehe ;)

  • We cloth diaper and I really, really dont need anything else. I am going to end up donating a bunch to a local women's shelter unless any of you are local to Atlanta :)

She told me yesterday that she had more but she PROMISED only a few, which means 2 bags full.

I don't even know how. This is grand baby #16 for her, at this point I would be like "Oh, another one. OK."
  • I wish I lived in Atlanta now... hahaha If she got them at places like Target, you can always return and get normal non-baby related things.

  • Wow!!! I have almost NOTHING! I have my first shower in 2 weeks so maybe I will after that. DH doesn't want me to buy any clothes bc he thinks that's all people will buy us. I love baby clothes though! So cute!!

  • Yeeeesh! If the tags are on, definitely return them and get credit/cash. Or, you can ship them to the team greeners once we have our babies....we'll pay for postage ;-)

A lot of them have tags but she works in a thirft store, as ell (Which I am cool with) so while a lot have tags, I have no idea where they were bought or what she bought new.
Her store has some kind of deal with local stores where they get leftovers that arent sold so she is constantly getting clothes new with tags.

I thought my mom had a shopping problem ;) On the plus side, more clothes = more time before you have to do laundry!

You are very blessed! My mom still wont come around to my LO and isn't excited at all.
Seeing baby clothes makes me want to shop for more!! I need to take stock of what I have and see what I need.
Another idea- you could resale in a consignment store/sale if the tags aren't still attached. That's where I'm getting the majority of my baby clothes.

Wow thats a lot.  I would say donate them if you're not going to use them, especially if they are from the thrift store.  At that point, most likely the stores will no longer accept them since they no longer carry those styles.
This - if she really won't stop, just say thank you and donate whatever you don't need. Maybe if you tell her that's what you're going to have to do, she might stop.

She works for Value Village (they are all over) . I generally spend time around Mableton/Austell/Marietta ones and always find a lot of really awesome baby stuff, I just don't buy it, lol
  • WOW! That's a lot.

Do you have a local mom swap? We have one on FB where moms sell their stuff. That's always an option.

  • I'll buy anything from you with whales! ;-) I'd probably just be honest like PP said and tell her you're going to have to start donating stuff...

  • If there is a way to return some stuff or exchange it for a size up, that might be worth it. If not, tell her that if she wants to buy baby clothes, they need to be in 3-6 or 6-9 month sizes from now on!
  • My mom has been the same way with this baby. My nana says she needs to take her credit cards from here when they are together since my mother bee lines straight for the baby section and wants to buy everything! I love her to death and I feel incredibly grateful, but I have officially run out of room to put everything.
  • Maybe take them to a kids consignment store and get credit for bigger sizes or baby supplies? That is a lot of clothes!!
  • With my older son, my MIL was over-buying like crazy. We have a very small house and we really did not have room to be storing tons of clothes in all sorts of random sizes and seasons. I finally told her that she would have to store anything else she bought at her house because we were literally out of room. She tried to give me a few more bags of stuff after that and I thanked her but reminded her as politely as possible that we were out of room so she needed to hang on to them for us.

I did end of donating a ton of stuff that she had given us. But she also kept a bunch of outfits so if the boys need an emergency outfit change at her house, she is covered. I think it has only happened twice and I intentionally don't pack extra outfits when she watches them so there is a chance she will need to use hers.
