Birth weight

We will be getting an ultrasound pretty soon & the doctor will estimate the weight/length of my baby boy. How close/far from your ladies littles ones actual birth weight/ length from what your doctors estimated, if they did estimate.

Re: Birth weight

  • I had an ultrasound on my due date with DD - she was estimated to be 7.5-8.5 pounds.  She was born two days later just a hair over 6 pounds so mine was WAY off.

  • They told me mine would likely be 7lb12. Not sure how accurate that will be. I was in the high 8s, so I'm still not buying any newborn clothing or diapers.

  • With DD1, they estimated her at 7lbs 8oz two days before she was born. She was 9lbs 2oz, it was pretty far off. I didn't have any estimations for the next two.

  • With my first, I had an ultrasound and they estimated him to be 7lbs 8 oz. Then the doctor told me he'd probably be about 8 lbs when I delivered. I ended up being induced a few days early (due to high BP) and he was 7 lbs 9.7 oz. My 2nd son was 7 lbs 9.3 oz. We thought he would be bigger but almost the same as big brother!

  • I feel so small for being 5 weeks away from my due date, I'm excited/nervous to see how big/small LO is when he gets here :D
  • They guessed DS1 was about 6# 8oz about 36 hours before he was born and he was 6# 2oz so in my case, it was fairly close.  I don't know how accurate of a guess you'll get 5 weeks from your due date though...

  • At 36 weeks with number two he was weighing about 6 lbs.. which meant he could be 8-11 ish lbs at birth, he was 9lb2oz so it was pretty accurate.. only thing that measured way ahead was his head ;) which was quite large
  • I'm sure not accurate all at but I'm ready for the reassurance from my doctor on if he's as big as he's supposed to be. There are days I feel massive & then I think of how far along I am & feel way too small.

it doesn't always correlate with how you carry.  Today LO measured ~5lbs 11oz, meanwhile people tell me that I look incredibly small and guess I'm 6 months or so, meanwhile LO is measuring about 3.5+ weeks ahead in all areas and in the 80-something percentile.

My MFM wasn't concerned with LO's measurements, and said that they should be taken with appropriate caution as imaging is imprecise, 2-dimensional, subject to human error, etc...

  • With DS, they estimated he would be 7 lbs at birth based on his growth u/s, and he was 7 lbs 1 oz. DD, they also said 7 lbs, but she was only 5 lbs 10 oz at 39 weeks. Both were 4 something lbs at 32 weeks.  This one "weighed" 4 lbs 4 oz at 32 weeks, and the OB is telling me 8 lbs (based on a 1/2 lb gain per week) - I highly doubt this estimate, based on my other 2 kids, but we'll see.

  • I don't remember an exact weight estimate but my OB said DS1 would be big. He was 9lbs. Then with DS2 he measured 5lbs at 32 weeks and my OB told me to expect another big baby like DS1. He came out at 10lbs 11oz. Even my Dr said he was surprised he was THAT big.

Don't fear! Big babies are awesome. :) I had an easier birth with him than with DS1.

  • I didn't have an u/s after 20 weeks with my first, but one of the MWs in my group estimated 8-8.5 lbs based on external measurements and my weight.  Our son was 8.1 so she was right on.

  • On my EDD with DS1 they estimated that he would be about 7.5-8 pounds.  24 hours later, I gave birth to a 9 pound, 1 ounce baby.  So that was awesome...

  • With dd1 it was estimated she'd be over 10lbs at birth, and she was 7.5lbs.  With dd2 they said she'd be around 7lbs and she was 8lbs 10oz.  Not even close.

  • They kept telling me DD was a big baby and at 38 weeks they sent me for an US to measure.  Tech guessed 9lbs at 38 weeks.  She was born at 41w and was 8.3 lbs.  They also said DS was a big baby, but I never went for an official late ultrasound.  He was born at 40w4d at 9.8 lbs.

  • Never have gotten anyone to guess but DH was 10lbs 12oz and I was 8lbs 11oz... Our girls have been 7 lbs 7 oz, 7 lbs 14 oz, and 7 lbs 9 oz... All of them wore newborn clothes for at least a month... DH and I think DS will be at least 8 (he's guessing 9!) but it's all a guessing game.
