Gift ideas for a new(ish) mom?

Hi ladies,

It's been a while since I've been in the throes of having an infant around -- frankly, our experience was so, um, intense, that it probably is the sole explanation for why my kids will be 3 1/2 years apart instead of closer in age. :)

So I have an acquaintance who had a baby about six weeks ago, and I'd like to send her a present, but am a bit at a loss for what would be good. We don't live in the same city, so it'd be ideally something I could order online and send (Amazon Prime would be a super plus!). I meant to send something when the baby was born, but time got away from me, and so now the baby is six weeks old, will probably be about two months when the gift arrives.

The mother is actually my husband's brother's ex-girlfriend, which may sound odd, but when she and my BIL were together, they were pretty serious -- I spent a few family vacations with her, including Christmas. They broke up a few years ago (her baby is with her new fiancé), but I always liked her a lot, and we've stayed in light touch via Facebook. When we had our daughter, she sent some really sweet handmade gifts (even though they had broken up by then), including a gorgeous hat she knit herself. I'd like to return the favor!

Her updates as of late have all indicated that she's having a bit of a tough time -- it seems the baby doesn't eat very much and doesn't sleep very well... not that unusual for a six-week-old, but that motivates me even more to try to think about getting her something that would be helpful? Initially I was going to send her a Miracle Blanket, but I just saw a pic showing that she already has one. :) And I think what's tripping me up a bit is that, if they're six weeks in and the baby has given them a few issues already, they probably have already tried/bought a lot of things?

Any thoughts on what might be a lifesaver? Of course, I can just ask her, but honestly, I don't want to add another thing to her list if I don't have to do so!

  • Thanks, ladies! I didn't even think to check her registry, whoops. :) Not much left on there though...

Oooh, I can put together a girly package for her for sure... great idea, thanks!

  • I definitely like the suggestions @bookworm982 made.  I went through a rough stretch when DS was about 6-10w and a gift for ME would have been a lot more meaningful.

I know she's not local, but is there a way you could arrange to have dinner or something delivered?  There were times where putting DS down just to grab something to eat was nearly impossible.
