Throwing Food and Milk Consumption Questions - $6.49 (Because cost of living has surely gone up!)

So, I have a couple questions...it's a 2 for 1 deal this week but still more than $5.99 because I'm sure COL has gone up...

1) How the heck do you keep your kids from throwing food on the floor? Say "NO!" and take their food away? That's what I've read but that seems so harsh. And, maybe I'm just putting too much expectation on how much LO should eat but it seems like after a few bites, he's starting to throw stuff and not eating anymore which signals to me that he's done?

2) For those of you that still nurse morning and night or bottle twice a day, how much other milk (cows, soy, goat, etc.) does your LO consume through out the day? LO still nurses right when he wakes up and right before bed and I offer WCM at his three snacks and three meals and yet he never finishes a full sippy. The same one I fill up in the morning is the same one he's using for dinner. It's almost like he consumes maybe 5 oz of WCM through out the day??! That just seems so low. He does have access to a water sippy all day...at least on the weekends...not sure about daycare so maybe he drinks more milk at daycare... But yeah, I just feel like he should be drinking more WCM? He has plenty of wet diapers still..

Would appreciate anyone's BTDT advice or any FTM advice from those going through the same! Or maybe I just need to CTFD?

Thanks ladies!

  • As far as throwing food on the floor, I just ignore it. Any reaction is fun for them. If you pretend like it doesn't matter to you, my experience is that they will stop.

No advice for WCM as we are no longer nursing. L takes in 16-20 oz plus yogurt and cheese throughout the day.

    1) he gets a warning and then he gets his food taken from him. If he is hungry, he will eat. Kids this age really only need one good meal a day. Ben eats well in the morning, so he gets a breakfast at home and one at DC. He eats worst at dinner. If he throws his food or just refuses to eat, I know he's already had enough to eat.

    2) I think kids only need 16-22 oz of dairy total. So, if he only has 5 oz of WCM, plus nursing, plus a yogurt or cheese, he's more than making his goal. But really, with nursing twice a day, I wouldn't expect him to take in more than 5 oz of WCM.

  • Food gets taken away when it gets thrown. He only throws food when he is full or doesn't like it, or wants something else. Usually he wants something else, so we finish feeding him with a fork or spoon and pairing what he doesn't want with what he does and he eats it.

We don't nurse at all, but C still doesn't drink much milk. 8oz at bedtime, and a few more here and there throughout the day. He doesn't like to drink with meals.

  • I just clean it up afterwards and don't worry about it? I figure he'll stop eventually.

    Same.

Also, I offer him milk in a sippy and if he drinks it then great if not I don't worry about it. He gets cheese and yogurt and plenty of other dairy throughout the day.
  • My LO will throw food (or put it on her head) if she's full or doesn't like it.  I have to stick with feeding her one type of food at a time, with the most undesirable first.  Ex: feed veggies, then chicken, then fruit.  If I feed her fruit first, the chicken and veggies go on the floor.

Some days she'll take more milk than others.  I'm also still nursing 3x a day.  If she drinks too much, it comes back up, so I don't force it.

  • I tried ignoring the food throwing but it made it worse. Now I just say no and take his bowl away. It's usually because he's done with that kind of food so I try and just say all done and he'll sign back and then we are done.

As for milk, I'm still nursing and he doesn't drink wcm. He nurses morning and night and during the week I pump at lunch and he gets that the next day. Maybe 4oz. He does get yogurt in the am and sometimes cheese as a snack. He eats a wide variety of pretty healthful foods so I'm not too concerned. I'd like to drop the pump but haven't taken that leap yet.
  • Thanks for posting @Altima80‌ ! We are in the same boat. I dont think I would be as concerned if Maggie was a bigger baby, but she is just a peanut! She throws most of her food on the floor unless its raspberries or cheese. We try and ignore it but it's getting old. She drinks water well throughout the day and probably averages around 8 oz WCM in her Camelbak. We give her a 6-8 oz bottle before bedtime of half formula, half WCM. Im so worried about her size. I wish she would eat more!

  • Thanks for everyone's responses! Didn't mean to post and run...just had an extremely busy day at work. Sounds like I need to CTFD about the milk. And thanks for sharing all your experiences with the food throwing. Like @KateJuly103, I too have a peanut. He might be up to 20lbs now. I just don't like taking food away when he obviously doesn't have a weight problem. Although, what one year old has a weight problem now that you think about it, lol.

Thanks again...we'll keep working on this! Sometimes I just end up saying in my head, "baby's gonna baby." =-P
