Hi, parents and parents-to-be!
I thought this was worth sharing.
We were legally married in Canada in 2012. in 2013 we had our bouncing, baby boy. We didn't fully engage with or understand the way in which civil unions and marriage interacted, so we thought we would pursue a 2nd parent adoption after he got here. Well, silly us, it turns out that, according to interpretation, we are (and were!) eligible to have both moms on there. Basically, Hawaii civil unions grant unions outside of the state of Hawaii, which are not recognized by Hawaii, but with the same bindings as civil unions, all the rights and privilege of marriage. Which, in our case, would be to have both of us on the birth cert.
The person at Vital Stats implied that we needed to register our marriage and then be granted a civil union in Hawaii, but we know this isn't right because we looked into it during tax time.
So, here we are, a year and a half later, requesting both of us on there. Man, the Vital Stats lady was nervous. I was nice, but pretty clear. She is forwarding the request to her head-honcho. And suggested he may refer it to the Attorney General. Ooo, I love a good precedent case!
Anyway, I'll keep you posted as we escalate (or resolve!) our Birth Cert fun.

"Things separate from their stories have no meaning. They are only shapes. Of a certain size and color. A certain weight. When their meaning has become lost to us they no longer have even a name. The story on the other hand can never be lost from its place in the world for it is that place.”

Thank you for posting! Yes, all of this stuff is fascinating/terrifying/enraging.
Since we were married in CT in 2010, our marriage was legally recognized in MN on August 1st, 2013. That was, coincidentally, the same date as our our randomly selected court date for our adoption. I have not asked the question (because my heart and pocketbook can't bear the answer) as to whether that adoption was actually necessary given the law changes on marriage. I will need to get the question answered if we do move forward with #2. Because let me tell you, this gal 'aint forking over another $3k for an adoption that isn't necessary!
Keep us updated, I'm anxious to hear how this is resolved for you guys!
