NWMR Throwing- Cups & Food

Does anyone have any advice on how to stop their LO from throwing their cup and their food in the highchair? He is only one so I am assuming it's just a stage but I don't want to completely ignore it.

Right now no is pretty funny and he loves to test me. I really only say no if he is doing something dangerous- ie going after wires, trying to get into the electrical sockets and I have to remove him from the situation. But I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to get him to stop throwing food he doesn't want. I will ask him if he is all done and do the sign for all done but it's not working! I've tried "you don't throw your cup- give to mama", "your cup goes here" "cup here"- just to make it more simple and none of it seems to work. Do I keep trying these tactics or is there a different approach I should take?! Or is this just a phase that I gotta get over!?

  • @kdc2007- Good idea! I debated taking the tray off the high chair this morning but didn't do it.

  • We worked on signs and words for "more food" or "all done."  That seemed to help.  He still does it, but now that he's 2.5, we count to three or say "if you bang your cup one more time, then [consequence]" like no more crackers or time out or dinner's over.

  • Thanks everyone! I am working on the sign "more" which he has been doing on occasion! And we had success with placing the sippy back on the tray when he is done, over the weekend. I guess I just have to keep reinforcing and giving a lot of praise. He was really pleased with himself when we were saying good job when he didn't throw the cup!

I am going to try out the other signs this week too- for eat and all done. I can see how sign language could really help. LO is one but he understands things and can get testy so maybe the clear way to communicate will help things.
