Plugged Duct

What's the best way to relieve a plugged duct? Thanks!!!

Re: Plugged Duct

  • Different people will have different advice. For me warm shower and hand expressing in the shower, followed by ibuprofen and nursing as much as possible. Try to massage your breast where the plug is while you nurse and also while in the shower. Plugged ducts suck! I'm sorry you have to deal with one.

  • I dangle my nipple into a cup of hot water allow the duct to begin to break up and then pump

  • Thanks for the advice ladies! How long does it typically take to resolve?
  • Sometimes it's quick (hours), other times I have it linger for a few days. Hope yours resolves quickly!

  • I've been lucky so far and have only gotten 1 plugged duct in 13 months. What worked for me was a hot compress, massaging and hand expressing. It lasted about 12 hours. I just kept doing those 3 things plus my son was nursing. Hope it clears up quickly.
  • all the above advice- plus you can take lecithin 4x a day to help break up the clog. really hot baths always worked well for me, too, to help loosen things up. have your LO nurse right after you get out of the bath. usually the soreness abates after a day or two, but the hard spot can take up to a week to completely disappear.
