Cosmetics

Does anyone know of a list of cosmetics that are safe/not safe? I'm reading about ingredients that are dangerous, but most of my makeup bottles are tiny and don't have the ingredient list on them (probably on the boxes that have been recycled already). I'm sure there's a better list out there somewhere but I haven't found it yet. Thanks in advance!

Re: Cosmetics

  • I don't know much about this since I don't wear makeup but I would just keep doing what I always do. Just don't eat any of it ;)

Also, I found this on webmd so maybe it could help.

  • The problem is that it can be absorbed into the blood stream from regular application and the effects are bad for the baby, or at the very least unknown. I don't wear much makeup anyway, but I guess I will be wearing less until I can ask my midwife in person.

My approach is to avoid anything that is uncertain. A lot of people think that having a baby born with all it's parts means everything they did during pregnancy was safe, but many of the toxins affect things much later in life (autism, ADHD, developmental delays, etc.). To me, it's not worth the risk for something that isn't essential to begin with.
  • I'm not sure about cosmetics, but I know that of you have moisturizer with Retinol in it, it's not safe during pregnancy.

I am very concerned about this also.  I was just on the IF board talking about our new couch and the danger of VOCs.  Someone posted this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-kc3AIM_LU
This feature from Good Morning America also really opened my eyes to what is in a baby's nursery: https://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2012/01/19/the-indoor-pollution-threat-you-may-not-have-known-existed/

I am not sure how to eliminate my risks because I've never been a "green" person.

DH and I purchased a medical grade air purifier (Austin HealthMate Jr. Not cheap!) to help with all of the VOCs.  Aside from our new couch, we will be buying all new furniture for the baby (assuming everything goes well with this little bug) and because it's very hard (and expensive!) to find organic furniture I'm hoping the air purifier will help.

Other than that, I switched to organic milk after reading that many researchers recommend organic milk for pregnant women.  I'm trying to buy organic meats, but honestly, I eat out and realize that I'm probably not helping the cause when I do that.
I've cut back on the hair products I'm using due to phtlates (sp?) , but have yet to find an organic brand I'm happy with.   I'm at a total loss for makeup.  Perhaps the ELF brand?   I haven't read much about makeup, but I do know that some brands claim to be organic and then "sneak" other things.  It's so hard to know.  From a Google search, here are a few organic makeups I found: https://www.physiciansformula.com/en-us/product-line/organic-wear.html https://www.eccobella.com/

It's scary though, isn't it?  Like someone else said, many of these things aren't showing up until later.  But every little thing you can do helps, right?

  • @LO95 Thank you for sharing that! I will check it out. Also, kudos to you for taking environmental risks seriously and doing what is needed for your baby!! It's refreshing to see someone else be passionate about doing everything they can to give their child the best start in life! :)
  • @katnhiding Getting information about dangerous toxins doesn't scare me. I'm not worried, just trying to find more concise info on the topic. A lot of the potential dangers are from things that are absorbed into your bloodstream when you rub them into your skin, so actually it wouldn't require eating your makeup, which I already don't do. Thanks though. I'll definitely ask my midwife when I see her next week.
  • @Kat0217 I've developed a bit of a reputation on the Infertility board for being the worrier.  So imagine my worry when I posted a thread about the couch thing and people actually agreed with me!

  • Good point, @katnhiding but luckily I don't put much stock in things on the internet unless they do actually link to the science behind it or come from a highly reputable source, such as a scientific journal. This is the type of info I was seeking with this post, not random articles from People magazine or something. ;)
  • Holy Jebus. Seriously? I meant compared to the people I've talked to about this in real life. Everyone here is just looking for a reason to be pissed off and offended for no good reason. Just stop.
  • Starbuck128 Thanks for the link!

  • When did I EVER say anything about YOU, @sugar4bri ?? It sounds like a personal problem. I didn't even know you existed until you replied, so how on earth could I have been saying that YOU aren't passionate enough?!?! Ugh. No matter what I say you guys either say I'm sharing too much or not enough. Stop being offended by every little fucking comment. If it's such a concern, ask for clarification.
  • @sugar4bri‌ So by, "Be mindful," do you mean, "Assume everyone will be outrageously offended by anything and everything you say with or without cause."? Because that's what's happening. I can't think of every single way someone might be offended (without justifiable reason) by something I say. That's ridiculous. What I have said has not been offensive or intended as such and yet people are preparing to burn me at the stake. This is absolutely ridiculous.

  • Thank you, @Starbuck128‌ for being the only person here to admit I'm not a horrible bitch and that this whole situation is ridiculous. That being said, I will be leaving this group. I apologized and explained my meaning and it did no good. There's clearly nothing for me here. If I wanted to be attacked by petty little girls, I'd go back to middle school. I may try to find a Natural message board, or I may just give up on the internet altogether. Let the attackers know they've succeeded in making a pregnant woman who is already alone because of the military feel completely isolated.
  • @kat0217‌ You really don't need to leave, especially if you feel alone and like you need support from other pregnant women. There are people on this board (like myself) who share some of your interests and concerns about what is healthy, natural, scientifically proven, etc. This is actually a really nice bunch of ladies, and I'm sorry you felt ganged up on. Come back tomorrow. It really won't be a big deal.

  • Holy moly. First off, try EWG's Skin Deep data base for your cosmetic and skin care products. Second, calm down. There's no reason to be rude.
