Anyone work at a desk all day?

I'm 33 weeks and plan on working as long as I can but I'm having issues trying to sit at my desk! My tummy always hits the front of my desk and gets sore after awhile but if I sit further back I can't reach the keyboard comfortably. Anyone else have this issue and if so can you suggest anything that's helps?!

Re: Anyone work at a desk all day?

  • My desk is sort of rounded and I'm not really sticking out too much yet. My keyboard is also fairly close to the edge of my desk.

    Sorry you're having trouble.

  • The keyboard cord is long enough that I've been able to adjust it so that the keyboard can be pulled closer to the edge of my desk. Can you check into that?

If that won't work, maybe IT can provide you with a cordless keyboard for the time being?

  • You can try an exercise ball. It may lower you just enough and may be a little more comfortable...
  • I have a wireless keyboard so that's not as much of an issue for me. But I do get crazy swollen ankles and a sore back if I don't get up and walk enough during the day.

  • Lower the seat? Footstool under the desk helps a lot too
  • I was thinking lower the seat too. I worked up until my due date last time and I never had problems with my belly getting in the way of reaching my keyboard.

  • My desk is a table so it's not really the problem. My dumb, uncomfortable chair is the devil though.

  • Thanks everyone! I have wireless keyboard but even with it on the edge my belly is still hitting the desk - maybe it's just the way I am carrying :( will def give an excersise ball a go tho - might be just low enough to solve the problem and help my back as well!
  • I have a ball, which helps my lower back quite a lot, but it's really too low for my desk. The ergonomics of pregnancy suck.

  • I sit with my legs crossed in the chair (my employer is a bit lax) so my belly has somewhere to go when I lean over, instead of stopping at my legs. It weirdly helps a lot.

I also used a ball when I was pregnant with DD and it helped, though so far this time I feel like I don't need it.  I am uncomfortable with baby up in my ribs, but I just make an effort to get up more and walk around a bit and it helps. Most walks are to the water cooler which has other beneficial effects!

  • @jenbub I had this exact issue - and it was mainly my doing. I would notice I hunched over the desk to reach the keyboard and just generally had bad posture. I got a ball chair - not just a ball but a an actual chair with back and arms that happens to be on a ball. It helped me sit up straight and by moving keyboard closer I am not crushing the belly.
Btw - I was also kind of freaked by this. Even wrote a few friends and asked if I was hurting baby. They told me she was fine but for piece of mind (and relieve back issues later) look into lumbar pillows or ball chairs. Talk to HR they should help provide. My company did - um...because one of the executives thought he was going to get in trouble for wrongly guessing my due date (August!!), why do MEN do that?? Just wait for the answer! The next day HR contacted me to ask if I could use anything. My list was ready in 5 minutes.
  • I second the exercise ball idea. I've been having trouble with back pain and ankle swelling at my desk, but haven't noticed my belly getting in the way of my keyboard. When I sit on the ball for lower back pain, though, I'm definitely at a different angle at my desk. One tip for buying a ball -- buy one size larger than the charts say you need based on your height since you're using it as a chair rather than for exercise.

  • I actually have a similar issue because my desk kinda sucks.  I snagged a chair that isn't as deep so my back is still supported but I can sit further from my desk and still reach.  Not sure if that makes sense.  I will occasionally change the height of my chair if needed as well.

  • My bump touches my desk too but it doesn't really bother me unless I'm hunching over.  I just go with it and make sure I scoot back a little.

Also, make sure you get up every hour or so, it is good for your back and eyes to get a break from the computer and may help with the soreness.

  • I sit on a yoga ball chair, so my belly is under my desk.

  • I work at a desk all day.  I've been noticing that I hunch over more to reach the keyboard which only achieves two things - 1. making my back hurt & 2. squishing baby like crazy.

So I realign my position in my chair and move my keyboard closer to the edge of my desk.  Mine is corded and has just enough to make it reach and be more comfortable, but if not I'd look into getting a wireless keyboard.

Also, it's really easy for me to forget to drink water like I should.  So every time the phone rings or the front door opens, I try to drink a few drinks of water after I'm done answering the phone or when the bell rings.

Those are my two biggest issues it seems, hope this will help you.
