Question...

Zachary is going to turn 3 months tomorrow and hasn't figure out tummy time whatsoever. When he's on my chest or I'm holding him upright he's holding his head up and pushing off. But if I lay him on his tummy on the floor he's not lifting his head up at all. He's just started rolling on his side and really wants to roll on his tummy but I'm concerned that he's not trying to hold his head up on his tummy. Anyone else?????

Re: Question...

  • My pedi counts anything that keeps the head off a flat surface and weight off the skull as tummy time. So she's fine with LOs sitting in a Bumbo or activity chair or on someone's lap or even lying on someone's chest.

  • Ds just started enjoying tummy time about a week ago. He kept doing superman and get frustrated. He's almost 4 mos.
  • @usernewname‌ that's so funny that you call it "superman". I feel like that's exactly what DD is still doing during tummy time (she'll be 4 months on Thursday). Hopefully we're about to turn the corner.

OP, sorry I have no advice. My LO has zero interest in rolling over, but she is able to hold her head up. This milestone has me super stressed out. I guess babies just do things in different orders.

Brooke is 4 months and has rolled over twice back to back times at the beginning of August and hasn't done it again but holds her head up like a champ and even trying to move where she wants to crawl.

  • My LO started to get it once I folded a burp cloth up under her and then propped her up on her elbows/forearms on top of it like a plank. My dr showed me. Helped a lot! Within a few days she was a champ and rolling over.
  • The superman used to piss him off so bad. Then he realized how to get his arms under him to prop up. He rolls belly to back. I hate yet to see an attempt from back to belly but he hates being on his back. And when he sleeps he's as still as a statue.

When I do tummy time I might put him down on his back first to see if he will roll.

I was going to suggest trying this. A rolled up blanket or towel under him for support might help. If you google tummy time pillow, you can see what the setup should look like. My LO still cried and fussed for a while even with the support but it did help her figure out how her arms should go and got her head up.

  • Do you have a boppy? I used that at first to do tummy time tucking his arms underneath him. By doing tummy time on the boppy- it really improved tummy time on the floor and with him lying on my chest. It's amazing how much he improved over te past few weeks.

We did the blanket rolled under his chest until he started moving off it. Now he just does tummy time on the floor but on a blanket

ETA like other pp I found sitting him up really helped with head control and for tummy time. The bumbo especially. He only flops a bit when he's really tired. Otherwise he holds it up no problem and loves his jolly jumper.
  • Thanks all. I will have to try the tummy time pillow idea when were home this weekend.

    Thanks so much.
