impetigo near mouth--dressing/bandages?

DD got impetigo & the blistered area is near the corner of her mouth. I am assuming her school will be ok w/ her going  since she'll be almost 48 hrs into antibiotics but I am sure they'd like to see it covered regardless and I wouldn't mind it being covered at home in the hopes no one else gets it in the next day or two...
But the location is tough, she's a pretty compliant kid (she's 5) so if I put a bandaid on there she will probably not mess with it but none of the options seemed really great for that location in terms of comfort & eating/drinking (I got the waterproof kind hoping maybe it would hold up a little better. Any ideas or creative solutions if you've had a kiddo w/ some kind of sore/rash close to the mouth?
Thanks!

My daughter had it on the corner of her mouth when she was 2.5 years old. We did not get antibiotics, just used Neosporin ointment a couple of times a day and it cleared up in about a week. We figured bandaging would be a lost cause at her age and didn't even bother messing with it.

If she is touching it, I'd think about bandaging it but if she can keep her hands away from it, I'd just leave it alone.

To clarify - we did see a pediatrician for the impetigo confirmation. I'm a nurse and was pretty sure I knew what I was looking at. I originally was using a tea tree salve but the pediatrician recommended Neosporin and then if did didn't clear up in a week to come back for antibiotics.

  • She is actually keeping a bandaid on ok... she is complaining of it itching so I think it will be good to prevent her from touching. Did your DC care about not having it covered? I'm concerned that her school will have an issue with it being uncovered and won't let me bring her without it covered.
  • At the time, my daughter was only going to a preschool on T/TH and then she was with either grandma or daddy the other days. I think it was noticed on a Thursday and it was almost all cleared by the time she went back.

  • Did they give you a cream for it? DS had a strep rash (similar idea) and the cream they gave us (Mupirocin) cleared up the skin surface in under a day!
  • I talked to the dr about the cream vs antibiotic and he felt that he sees kids return so frequently to get the antibiotics that he tends to just prescribe it...I actually called our dr to ask about it & the dr on call said w/ it on the face that it was not a bad thing to do the antibiotics to prevent the spread. The cream probably would have been ok but I am erring on the side of caution so she doesnt get more & no one at home gets it hopefully...
