Would you go on a trip to NYC right now?

edited August 2014 in October 2014 Moms
Hello. Seeking advice from moms who are further along than me. Based on how you feel this week, would you go on a trip to NYC? Would the walking be too much? If not NYC, where would you go instead?

Re: Would you go on a trip to NYC right now?

  • I would probably go up until 35 weeks as a STM. As a FTM, I went on a trip at 36 weeks where a lot of walking was involved and felt just fine. I think it would depend on how YOU specifically have felt this pregnancy. I know you are only 25 weeks along but if you've had a hard time up til now, I'd reconsider. If it's been an easy pregnancy, then I would most likely plan on it and then see how you feel as the date gets closer.

  • Depends on how far from nyc you are and how you feel. I am about 4 hours from nyc. Live in boston area and we went frequently before but at this point (34 weeks on sunday) I don't think I could handle all the walking we usually do and would not want to risk being that far away if I went early. I don't expect to go early but wouldn't want to chance it. But if you feel good and are not nervous like me then sure go and make sure you get one of those awesome waffles in central park.
  • Agreed that it depends on how far from NYC you normally live.  I wouldn't want to go from where I'm at since I'm on the West Coast.  But if you're just asking based on walking in the city, I'd definitely go.  If the walking gets to be too much at some point, take a cab!  Or the subway!  There are so many different modes of transportation that walking in NYC wouldn't be a consideration for me if I wanted to go.

I voted no, I just can't see enjoying a trip like that....too much walking, an unfamiliar bed (probably nowhere near enough pillows!!) and I couldn't enjoy the nightlife with wanting to be in bed by 9.

Eta: you might be the total opposite of me though, so to each her own!!!
  • I voted no. My feet hurt so bad sometimes it feels like all of my tendons are pulling apart from my bones. Everyone is different though, so my feelings might not be the same as yours
  • I'm a STM. I am actually in myrtle beach right now on vacation from NY. Walking around is probably the hardest part. If you are just going for a few days and you rest throughout the day you should be fine though

  • Well since I'm headed to a wedding just outside of NYC right now I felt like I had to vote yes. But we live only four hours away and I haven't had much trouble with walking yet. If the trip involved a long flight for you, I personally probably wouldn't do it. Also depends on how you are feeling overall and how far along you are (I'm on mobile and can't see signatures).

  • I don't see the big deal. Get some comfy shoes, grab a bottle of water, and keep it moving.

  • As someone from NYC I feel my opinion is good here :) I would not go.  I actually had a chance to go this past week and (intercontinental flight notwithstanding) you couldn't pay me enough to go at this point.

  • Everyone's different, but for me at 33 weeks last weekend we drove 3 hours. Up till then no issues but exhausted. . About an 1 1/2 hours in my feet were swelling and it was 102 out . By the time I got there my ankles were gone and the heat wave was horrible . I did not stay outside the whole time. I am done traveling!

I think if you feel great and weather will be awesome it might not be bad. Just bring good shoes and drink lots of water. it doesn't hurt to call your doctor and ask her opinion.

  • I wouldn't. I live on Long Island, and go into NYC fairly regularly for day trips, and it is a TON of walking. Granted, we take the subways and have a 3-year old in tow, but any way you slice it, you're going to be on your feet a lot.

During one recent trip, my SIL wore a pedometer and by the end of the day I believe we walked thirteen miles. We weren't trying to rack up miles at all. That was maybe eight weeks ago and I was pretty darn sore afterward.

I won't be going again before baby arrives. My body is telling me to slow down and take breaks between physical activity at this gestation, and I think that would be very tough to do while trying to get around the city. This is my own personal experience/opinion, of course, but I hope it helps!

@somewhatbohemian‌ depends too on how you feel--I had a lot more energy at 32 weeks than I did at 34. Now at 35, I have no problem walking around, but I do need a bathroom frequently--hotels are everywhere so you should be ok. Don't use Starbucks bathrooms here! Also, add a park into your daily itinerary so you can take off your shoes and relax a bit. For me living in NYC, swelling feet are the biggest obstacle.

Another NYCer here, and for me it depends on how far you are traveling to get here, when exactly you will be here, what you plan on doing, and if you've ever been here before.  If you would be coming for sight seeing, you would have to arrive knowing that you may not be able to walk everywhere you intend and may have to take taxis or the subway (which is at least air conditioned, unlike the tube).  Sight seeing will also include a lot of standing, especially if you plan to go to a few museums.

  • I said yes, but if I were going to NYC now at 35 weeks I'd go with a plan to eat good food, see some shows and generally relax. If you're planning to do heavy sightseeing, I'd say that's pushing it.  In terms of the flight, I just flew transatlantic at 34 weeks and it actually wasn't bad at all, even with a toddler in tow.

  • Thanks everyone! I am STM, deciding for a trip which would be when I'm 31 weeks along. I live on West coast in suburb. Have lived in NYC before for 2 yrs, but not while pregnant!

  • These days the on places I go are my toilet and couch!
  • I live in NJ and often have to go into NYC for work. I have been doing everything in my power to NOT have to go there this past month and have no plans to go again until I'm back from maternity leave. And I would just be going to sit on my butt in an office. There is no way I'd find a trip there enjoyable at this point.

  • Are you going now at 25 weeks or soon? I flew to Chicago at 28/29 weeks and did a ton of walking. 6 miles one day...4 all at one stretch. Drank tons of water while there and took naps but I was fine and glad I went.

  • Hmm, I'm about 31.5 weeks right now and I would go only if I was going with adults and not with another kid.  If I had to take my 20 month old toddler, that would be too exhausting.  But I think I could manage it with enough rest and breaks if it was an adults trip.  Then again, I'm not someone who is always rushing around while on vacation, so if you're one of those who wants to cram seeing every NY site into a short period of time, you'll have to probably modify your expectations.

Plus, you're pregnant.  No better time to go to Magnolia Bakery and to Serendipity for the frozen hot chocolate than when you're pregnant! :)

  • I would totally go but realizing it would be quite a different trip than normal. Lots more resting and pampering-type activities. Hydrate up. Limit the things you want to see and sleep as much as possible at night.

    Yes!

I would be at somebody's spa for at least one treatment to myself, and mooching the hotel for as many pillows as possible.
  • We spent a few hours shopping today (stocking up on comfy lounge clothes so I can hibernate all Winter with my babies) and it wore me out. I was at the point where my belly was so heavy that I could barely move anymore. My ankles were so swollen that they are still burning. I personally wouldn't do it but then again, some women run marathons when they are pregnant. I just suck at the last 5 weeks!
  • The temperature has been pretty manageable here this summer (it's usually awful), so that's a pro but if you're not used to all the walking, that may be an issue. Plus, public bathrooms are few and far between. I'm assuming you have to go a lot these days (I do!). When you're pregs though, most restaurants let you use their bathrooms. Also, public transportation when your pregnant is not super fun.
  • I would go, because I've never been and I've always wanted to... I may be uncomfortable and have to take a lot of breaks, but I would go!

  • Go for the food alone! But if you're coming from West Coast I may suggest staying close to home - I couldn't stand that 6 hour flight right now.
  • I went to NYC a few weeks ago with my first born's godmother. Hubby stayed home with the toddler. We walked most of the time, and took the subway when we had a long way to go. We saw two Broadway shows, and while I definitely got kicked more when there was loud music or if I didn't stay hydrated, it was still amazing. I recommend planning times where you can sit down somewhere air conditioned and also bringing along a big water canteen in a cross body bag that can be worn without rubbing against your bump too much, and field test your comfiest shoes that allow for swollen feet. I was surprised how many store clerks gave me blank looks when I asked if they had a water fountain, having a canteen with me that I could fill up with gallon jugs back at the hotel would have saved me a fortune. Also, check out WRNY (Well Rounded New York) for tips on events for pregnant women in the city and all the best shops.

  • We actually just went last weekend as our quick getaway before baby. :) We live 4 hours away and just planned for an extra bathroom break on the way. We stayed on 37th and on the first night walked to TS, dinner on restaurant row, to the theater, then back to the hotel. The key was leaving lots of extra time and keeping the pace slow. By the end of the night I was pretty beat and swollen but it was a perfect excuse for some pampering from the husband! The next day we cabbed it to Chelsea and walked around Chelsea market - a sitting break halfway through and I was ready for a cab back by the time we got to the other end. It was a great quick trip and definitely worth the tired hips, just pace yourself and don't be be shy about demanding a break - a tall iced coffee buys you cheap seats for people watching at Starbucks!
  • I live on the city so I walk 2 miles a day and take the bus or train on top of working out and regular yoga so my body (& mental state) is used to it. But I do try to avoid tourist areas because I don't have as much patience anymore (although I can't walk so fast either nowadays).

You can take cabs everywhere and plan to go to the theater, restaurants, parks, get dessert, shop a little and take it easy. There are bathrooms everywhere and hospitals are all around (worst case scenario). Most of my pregnant friends also walk and continue working out until their edd and don't go into labor because of it. Just listen to your body and rest whenever you get tired. Also, book a prenatal massage at a fab spa at the end of your trip and you'll be as good as new.
  • OP, if you lived in NYC I think you probably know the lifestyle, what there is to do, etc., rather well, and should make a decision based on that.  We all feel differently at various points in our pregnancy.
