I'm in the 12th percentile and going in for extra tests on Wednesday. Anyone else been through this before?

  • Yep. My DS was diagnosed IUGR at 24 weeks because he was 7th percentile. He measured under 10th percentile for the remainder of my pregnancy, and his diagnosis was "unexplained" because they couldn't figure out why he was small. He appeared 100% healthy, just tiny. So the doctors figured that if he wasn't getting the necessary nutrition via my placenta to grow properly, we would go ahead and deliver him at 37 weeks and he could begin growing outside the womb.

I delivered him via early induction at 37 weeks, and he was born at 5lbs 1oz. He was perfectly healthy. No NICU stay or anything like that. We felt so blessed!

What I had to do between 24 and 37 weeks was see a specialist for weekly ultrasounds to monitor growth and cord flow and for weekly NSTs to monitor his heart rate. It was a LOT of appointments, and I was always nervous about how DS was doing, but it all turned out ok.

Someone has to make up the lower portion of the percentiles. Some babies are just littler. Sometimes, though, there is a problem, so it's always good to check their growth and health. Sounds like your doctors are on top of things and you're in good hands! Good luck, and FX that baby has a nice big growth spurt this weekend! :)

What tests are they planning for you?

  • My baby is measuring at 5th percentile I have to go for a more detailed ultrasound thus week.i already have to be induced at 38 weeks due to hypertension.depending on how next week's u/s goes, it may be earlier.they didn't really tell me anything so I'm hoping for more answers when I see my Dr
  • 11 years ago I was warned that my baby was going to be very small and may need extra care in the hospital. He came out 6lbs 9oz. They were way off...so I don't put a lot of stock in size measurements.
    GL!
  • At 27 weeks my also was measuring in the 9th percentile. I had weekly biophysical profiles and a follow up growth scan 4 weeks later. At our follow up she moved up to the 14th percentile so we don't have to go weekly for the biophysical profile just another growth scan in 2 more weeks.

Like Emerald said it sounds like your doctors are on top of things. Hope your testing goes well and that your little one keeps growing !

  • Penny has been measuring consistently below the 20th percentile throughout this pregnancy (the twins have been exhaustively monitored for growth)...but my mil is a tiny tiny woman (under 5ft tall), so I am pretty sure DH just has tiny girl genes.

  • I meant to hit yes but clicked no for if you answered question, I'm sorry I'm new to the discussion board, thanks so much for your responce! I have been dropping , started at 23%, then 17%, then 15% and now 12%. Going wed for additional ultrasound, non stress test and biophysical. Do I need to
Do anything to ready myself for tests?

Nothing to do really to prep for the tests. The NST is just a monitor strapped on your tummy to measure baby's heartrate, and the ultrasound and biophysical are just a detailed sonogram, looking at baby's size, amniotic fluid levels, and the placenta and cord flow/resistance. They may look at some other stuff too, but this is what my appointments were like.

    FX for you and baby!!!

  • My baby went from 55% down to 10% for two consecutive scans. Everything looked normal, she was just measuring small all the sudden. We went to a specialist yesterday and she measured her at 30%. She told me to relax and enjoy the rest of the pregnancy. She has no problem seeing small babies as long as everything else looks good. I am continuing with my protein shakes though....just in case!
  • My fundal height is consistently measuring 2 weeks behind. At the 20 and 27 weeks ultrasound baby girl's arm and legs were measuring 10-14 days behind. Her abdomen and head were fine. I am having another growth ultrasound next week. Hoping for the best! They are chalking it up to me being short (5') and saying its genetics.
