Pregnancy with one kidney

Hello. As an intro I'm a 34 y/o mum of one teen and I'm just about to hit the six week mark in my third pregnancy (miscarried many years ago). I'm medically a little complicated. I have one kidney after removal of cancerous tumor a few years ago. The decision to have another child after cancer has been huge and one not taken lightly or without specialist medical advice. I also have coeliac disease. And a small incisional hernia (abdomen), and now elevated liver enzymes for which I have to have an ultrasound. Basically I'm finding myself stressing about every little symptom and feel like a complete hypochondriac! I think I need to stop googling. My last pregnancy was such a long time ago... But I don't remember feeling this dreadful! Lack of appetite, fragile (emotionally), nausea ugh. Maybe it's the age I don't know. My OB says one kidney is high risk but shouldn't be problem as long as we watch for high BP. This is reassuring. But I'm seeking to hear from anyone else who is/has been pregnant with one kidney as I would love to hear if this has impacted mum or baby's health at all. Oh, and coeliac, incisional hernias, and elevated ALT in early pregnancy. You see what I mean? It's a bit complicated. :/

Re: Pregnancy with one kidney

  • I have one kidney--I was born with only one kidney--and this is my second pregnancy. That hasn't been an issue whatsoever. I would think that's almost a non-issue, even having one removed, but I'm not a doctor. Sorry I can't help you more, but I hope the one kidney thing is insignificant. I have other issues as well that are much more worrisome than the one kidney. That's just a side note compared to the other things. Best of luck to you! Just try to breathe and ask your doctor questions if you think it's abnormal.

  • Thanks takmjs! My OB said it shouldn't be a problem and that many women face much greater risks during pregnancy. He noted an increased risk of high BP, pre-eclampsia, and early delivery due to on evident but otherwise everyhthing should carry on as normal. I hope your pregnancy is progressing well :)
  • I only have one kidney, removed when I was an infant. My kinda dr says that it is considered high risk to only have one kidney but all he has recommended so far is that I need to watch my blood pressure, watch for swelling and have my OB check for protein in my urine regularly. He told me I should watch my sodium intake as well. I am seeing him for the first time this pregnancy next week, 25 weeks pregnant. I think it may have more effect later in pregnancy but I am high risk for multiple other reasons so the drs are watching everything closely. I am also highly anxious about every little thing so dont feel bad about that. It's to be expected!!
