Hygeia v Medela

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I'm on mobile and can't search. I went back a few pages and see lots of praise for Medela but little info on Hygeia.

With DS, I had an Ameda and never really got the hang of it. I am a SAHM so it wasn't a big deal but I just never pumped and supplemented with formula when I was away from DS (always short periods). This time I'd like to try again with a new pump. My insurance will cover a basic Medela PISA or a Hygeia Q.

Does anyone have any experience with Hygeia, especially in comparison to the Medela or Ameda? I like that Hygeia and Ameda are closed systems but other than that I'm not sure on the advantages/disadvantages.

Thanks! Sorry for the long question.

Re: Hygeia v Medela

  • I've only ever used a Hygeia pump but I LOVE it. I used it for 18 mos with my DD. Great company, great product. It's a closed system hospital grade pump. Those two things make it better than Medela in my opinion.

  • I have one of each. I use all my medela parts with the hygeia, though because I have so many sets from ds1. The medela is not as smooth a mechanism and is a little rougher on my nipples but both are good choices. The medela motor seems more powerful because I can only use it turned up 1/3 of total power as compared to hygeia, which I can turn up most of the way because it is more gentle. Medela parts are more readily available stores though.

  • @theresat858  I've read the same complaints about the Hygeia.  When it works it's great and possibly better than the PISA but you're screwed if it breaks or you need new parts in a hurry.

  • I have both and like the PISA better for several reasons. 1) I like the letdown button/2 phase suction 2) I like that you only have to adjust speed and not suction, having to adjust both was too difficult for me to find the right setting, especially as a first time pumper 3) the PISA is way smaller and the Q is really heavy. Not a big deal if you aren't going to travel with it but it is the reason I bought the PISA 4) the Q comes with a standard 27mm breast shield, which was too big for me and I didn't realize it was a large size until I bought the PISA. 5) finally, I had to use an adapter to pump into the medela bottles that I used for storage with the Q. All in all they are both good pumps and I do like the closed system of the Q so I really wanted to love it, but I definitely vote for the PISA.
  • Thanks @kmtneb‌. I found the dual suction/speed settings on the Ameda overwhelming as well so I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. I think I'm going to try the PISA.
