Labial frenulum?? Or lip tie anyone?? Kinda long.

So I'll try to make this short. About 3 weeks ago, Maci got tubes in her ears. That same week after tubes I quit nursing. A couple days prior I was giving her a bottle (which I had just started doing a week before so I could wean her from boob) and noticed her top lip was digging in the bottle and kinda inverting it. Then while she was asleep I pulled up her lip and it didn't separate from the teeth.

Any how, I felt bad mentioning it to ENT the day of her tubes so I didnt. Then at our follow up, He said he could have clipped it while she was under. Ugh!! I should have said something to him!!!

We haven't seen pedi yet since I noticed it. He said a dentist should be able to do it in the office when she's a little older. Anyone have any experience with this?? When should I call pedi dentist? It's giving her a pretty good gap in between her front two teeth. Thank you!! image

  • Milo has a stage iv lip tie (so pretty significant). There are like five offices in the country that specialize in infant frenectomies (laser ones) and one is relatively local to us so we went to get Milo checked out. The dentist said that as it wasn't affecting nursing, to do nothing to it. She said it is only recommended if it is severely affecting nursing and that a lot of times when they start walking they fall and fix it themselves. It will likely result it a gap in his teeth but I'm assuming he'll need braces regardless so I'm not concerned.

  • We have a friend who is a dental hygienist and she said if they need to they will clip it before her adult teeth come in. She made it seem like no big deal so I am not gonna worry about it for now.

  • Delaney has an upper lip tie. I took her to the dentist hoping that if we clipped her lip tie. That it would save my supply. I had a huge drop in production on the left side. The dentist said he doubt that it had anything to do with it. He said in most cases it causes the child no problems. He recommends waiting until they have adult teeth and put them in braces. Once their teeth are straight them you clip the frenulum and this is what works the best. Now my daughter still isn't producing sounds that are consonants so; since she is being evaluated for her gait. I'm also going to have them check her out to make sure the lip tie isn't causing her to have issues making sounds. BTW my dentist didn't even charge me to confirm the lip tie, which I thought was really nice.

  • I've heard a lot of people say that too. That they usually fall and rip it! Ouch!! I would rather get it done professionally rather than wait for her to fall on her face.
  • Exactly what @Snowboarderbritt‌ said. Got her tongue tie clipped at 2 weeks and dd has a small lip tie that the dentist said they would clip if it gave problems later on
  • So I was curious because Emma's front teeth have a space between them and sure enough she deft has lip tie. I'll mention it to the dr next time

  • We just discovered that DD has one as well. We saw an ENT who specializes in tongue/lip ties and she said that rarely does she feel that clipping a lip tie helps significantly with feeding at this age. We are waiting and if any speech problems develop (or she ever goes under for anything else) we will address it then.
  • A dentist can deal with this in office now. I had to have mine fixed at 14 and it wasn't bad. Most dentists do the procedure with lasers now and it is an even easier recovery.
  • My kids both had lip ties that interfered with nursing. But our pediatric dentist who does laser tie revisions and is highly recommended for tie issues said that if ties do not interfere with breastfeeding, she doesn't recommend getting it revised "just in case" to ward off potential problems in the future.
