Wwyd-hyper sensitivity

I've been noticing some concerning things with Colby lately that I want to talk to his pedi about. They are nothing alarming or urgent. He has his 2 year appointment scheduled for the first week in October. Should I try to get him in sooner, or just wait out the month? Some of the things are hyper sensitivity with regards to things like kisses, dog licks, hand washing, wet wipes etc. I don't really know how else to describe it. It's more than just a toddler not wanting to be kissed or licked, he wipes at the spot repeatedly while crying. He cries when I change his diaper and says ouch whenever I use wipes or try to touch him anywhere near his penis or testicles (poopsplosions man) when I change his diaper he is really stiff in his legs and hips and it is very challenging to move them without him getting panicky. Is anyone else dealing with this?

I would just wait until the scheduled appointment. I would pay attention to it over the next month and jot down examples and whatnot. Does it always happen with wet things, every single time? Has he always done it to some extent, or is the whole sensitivity relatively new?

It sounds like a sensory thing. Not horrible, but worth talking to the pedi about. Maybe call and let the office know that the appointment will be to talk about a sensory issue alongside the well baby check, just so they have a heads up.

it has always been a challenge with his diaper, but now that he is talking more he is saying ouch and other things. It isn't really that new, over the past few months I have really noticed it and started paying attention to it more. Sometimes he is more receptive to it if it's on his terms, but that is rarely.

  • I too, would wait to bring it up at his scheduled appt.  Sophia also often says "it hurts" when I wipe her with a wet wipe during diaper changes.  At first I thought she was getting a rash and I just wasn't seeing it yet, and now I wonder if she just remembers it hurting form when she had a rash in the past?  Her skin is sensitive, so who knows.

I think it could definitely be within the norm for toddler quirkiness to be hyper-sensitive about getting wet or damp- sometimes they equate wetness with dirtiness because of wetting the diaper.  If it's getting worse though, maybe they could give you pointers on how to encourage him to be more laid back about it, and enjoy things like kisses.

So he's not just saying that it hurts, he's actually genuinely acting like it hurts. No rashes or anything. If he had a piece of wipe or fuzz or anything anywhere near his diaper region, there is no way I would be able to get it off him. Like I literally cannot touch him down there at all. (Not in a weird way, promise!) he is fine with things like the tub, beach, hose etc. it's so sad not being able to kiss your baby without him crying.

  • I was going to say sensory related too. My BFFs son has sensory processing issues and what you're describing with the kisses, licks, etc. sounds familiar. Keep a running list and mention to pedi in October for review. Look at sensory processing disorder symptoms online. It's definitely manageable if it is that.
