Cloth Diapering

Putting LO's name on diapers

Lurker-coming-out-of-the-shadows alert! Everything I know about cloth diapers I've learned from this board, and we've been having a really good experience with cloth so far. Y'all are awesome! This question has me stumped, and I was wondering if you had any ideas:

When my LO started daycare, she was the only one in CD. But now she's one of two, and the school has asked me to write her name on her diapers. NBD, right? Except that I'm trying to keep the diapers as pristine as possible in case I need to sell them or use them for a second kid. I've tried writing her initials on two kinds of tape (Scotch and—don't laugh—electrical [that was just what I happened to have on hand]) and putting the tape on the diaper tags, but it just washed right off.

Do I have any choice but to write her name in Sharpie on the tags, and do people care about that kind of stuff when they buy used? I don't sew at all, so any solutions involving needle and thread are right out. I can't be the only one with this problem, but I haven't run across any better ideas.

Re: Putting LO's name on diapers

  • There's some iron on kinds that you can personalize. Let me google for you!

  • I used a sharpie to put initials on the Bumgenius tags of mine.

And just for the record, permanent marker does fade with lots of washes.

Are you handy with sewing?  You could make ribbon tags and add them to the diapers in spots that stand out.  Just use the same ribbon for everything.

Actually that site has washable stickers too! That's what I'd go with so they could be removed down the line but should stay on during laundering. And the price seems pretty reasonable.

  • I wrote "swim" on one diaper with a sharpie. It's slowly fading.

And it's not even as a swim diaper anymore. Sigh. I'm trying to forget about it.
  • Doing something to the tag is I think your best bet. Initial it in sharpie or a sticker or sew on a piece of ribbon. Personally a sharpies initials on the tag wouldn't bug me.

  • Tie a ribbon through the tag?  Or if you've been thinking about snap pliers (so you can fix broken snaps, add snaps to inserts, etc) you could add snaps to a length of ribbon (or other fabric) and snap it around the tag.  Or if the diaper doesn't have a tag visable from the outside you could snap the ribbon to an unused snap on the diaper itself.  You could either write you LO's name on the ribbon or just establish with DC that the 'this color" ribbons are yours.

Just don't do an "X" or "/" I've seen both used to denote a second diaper. And I've seen some sellers "claim" they did that instead of it being a second and I kind of gave that posts an eye roll. But I think you'd be fine with actual initials.

  • These are some great ideas—thank you so much! I think I'll start with tying the ribbon around the tag and go from there.
  • Mabel Labels is another label company that makes clothing labels.  They are stickers but you can wash the item and I've heard they last a long time.

  • Labelyourstuff.com they iron on and when you get them hot again can be peeled off. I use them on DS clothes not sure what an iron would do to cloth diapers. Good luck.

  • some great ideas, but can't you just label the wet bag? no one labels every disposable. They should pull from the  clean labeled bag and put in dirty labeled bag.

  • I used the washable labels from one of the label sites on DD's wetbag tag it's still on there almost 2 years later.  Those things are pretty indistructable.
