Kid Sizing

So I always like to try and buy ahead for the next season since kids clothes cost so much for the little time they wear them. Currently DS is in a 3T moving into a 4T in tops and about 2T/3T pants. He fits wonderfully in a 3T short. I'm kind of trying to figure out what size to put him in for next summer. I look at the 5T/5 and they looks so long in a short. If you're buying ahead what size is your LO currently in and what are you buying for next spring/summer? I figured I'd purchase some from Kohl's because of their awesome return policy.

Is there a big difference from a 5T to a 5?

Re: Kid Sizing

  • I have not seen a big difference in 5T vs. 5. But I think if he's comfortably wearing 3T now, you'll probably be looking at 4 next summer. It's common for kids to slow their growth at this age.

  • I don't buy ahead more than a couple of months. Like Melody said, kids slow their growth at this age and I don't want to end up with clothes they don't wear. Ethan is in a 2t now and I have 2t and 3t for fall and winter. Maya stayed in 2t for a year and 3t for a year.
  • I'm currently buying 5t/5 for my oldest, the regular 5 is a little bit bigger on him than the 5t. Truthfully, I would be looking at 4t for next summer for your guy.

  • I am actually planning on DD being in the same size next summer, I did not see much of a difference between the waist in 2T and 3T so I decided to let her shorts be a bit long this year and a bit short next year.

  • Thanks ladies! I was kind of panicking thinking 5T for a 3 year old? I knew they slowed down I was just nervous since he's grown so much in the last 6 months. I'll start shopping for 4T. At least with Kohls I can always return them easy! Off to shop!

James has been able to repeat shorts for two seasons. I wouldn't buy over a 3T in shorts or they will be pants. I prefer for shirts to look fitted, not baggy so I wouldn't do a 5T for next spring/summer. James really thinned out between 2 and 3 (and stopped wearing diapers) and even more so between 3 and 3.5. He and Leo can wear a lot of the same shorts right now only difference is they hit Leo below the knee and James above (but still not short shorts). I've never measured but I bet their waist size is the same.

And regarding length, it might just be the brands I buy but once you get into the boy section the shorts are designed to be a longer baggier fit because that is more what is in style for school aged kids.

This is us :( I am currently contemplating trying again but I have yet to pull the trigger!  DH and I both bought shorts and T-shirts for DS (size 24mn) on sale last year for a dollar or two (so we didn't spend a lot but the savings would have been nice...). about 10 pieces total and all of it was too big this year - falling down big!!

He is now just wearing the T-shirts (and can wear those into the fall / winter under sweatshirts etc.  but not the shorts; maybe next year, but my luck he'll need the next size!

  • You'll be fine buying ahead w/ Kohl's return policy - so that wouldn't worry me.

But, my big kid just started wearing 5T/4 this past year.  I found that 5T was closer to 4 than it was to 5.  He can wear some shirts in 5, but is more comfortable in 5T/4.

Also - definitely keep in mind the diaper thing - by next summer there's a chance that you'll be potty training / trained and once the diaper goes away pants fit so much better.

  • I am actually not buying ahead this year. L has been in 3T since the spring (big then, perfect over the summer, presumably smaller in the fall), so I am holding off.

If she is able to fit in her spring clothes this fall, I will be ecstatic. That would mean she might be in a 4T this summer or have a huge growth spurt and jump a size. I just don't think I will be able to buy more than a season ahead for her any more.

  • My almost 4 year old is still in 3 & 4T, so I am no help there.

My S12er is in mostly 2T & will be throughout the fall & winter for sure. I don't like to buy ahead, but if I did, I would buy her 3T for next summer.

  • I found that my boys repeated clothes sizes for a couple years, as well.  I'd shoot for some 3t and very few 4t items for dex.  He still lacks that arm length and leg length.  But shoes, the kids pushing into an 8 right now.  smh.

  • Well I ended up buying a few pairs of shorts in a 4T but won't buy anymore. I bought them at Kohls so the return policy won't be an issue. I've told DH he needs to stop me if I try to buy more :D Thanks ladies for the input!

  • G is still in 2T I think she may be into 3T by winter. I have actually just purchases summer and winter stuff in 2T, 3T and 4T. Her 3T wardrobe is pretty much done for summer or winter. Maybe a few more things. I figure at this point in time she will probably be in both per size.
