Runner Check-In

I tried looking back several pages, but didn't see a recent runner check-in, so I figured I'd make one.  If it turns out that I stink at the internet and there is one, I apologize in advance and please share the link with me. :)

How are you feeling during runs?

How far are you running?  Miles per week?

Any upcoming races?

Any advice regarding running from your OB that you'd like to share?

Any tips for successful running in the 2nd tri that you'd like to share?

Re: Runner Check-In

  • How are you feeling during runs?
How far are you running?  Miles per week?  I'm running between 2-6 miles 4x a week, for a total of 16+ miles per week.  I'm still running it all the way without walking breaks, but once my long runs in my 1/2 marathon training plan are longer than 6 miles, I'll be adding in walking.
Any upcoming races?  I ran a 5k this past weekend and am looking for a 10k to sign up for.  I have my 1/2 marathon on October 19.
Any advice regarding running from your OB that you'd like to share? My OB tracks my running times through MyFitnessPal.  She is completely supportive of my running, as long as I am keeping my pace slow enough that I could carry on a conversation while running.  That said, I've been doing most of mine on a treadmill at a 12 min mile.  When I ran the 5k, I was at a 9:30 pace (it's SO hard to go slower when you're outside in a race!) and she got after me about it.  Peanut is fine, but I have to keep myself in check for races.
Any tips for successful running in the 2nd tri that you'd like to share?  Not really, just drink LOTS of water during your runs.  I have loved slowing my pace and watching re-runs of tv shows on my computer while running lately.  Also, on the days I feel like crap and don't want to run, as long as I force myself to do it, I always feel better after my run than I did before I started it.  Those endorphins are pretty awesome. :)

  • @CrazyCornball - you're not a fraud!  :)  I used to be a pretty hardcore runner (as in the # of races I did, not my speed ;) ), but stopped completely when I got pregnant with DD1 and didn't start again until March of this year.  I'll have to look into the Gabriella belt, that sounds awesome!  So far, my belly isn't moving much, but I know that it will be soon.  I hope your new OB is able to give you good advice.  My OB is a fitness freak (but I love her), so she's really pushed the whole "as long as you can carry on a conversation" cardio rule so that I keep it up.

  • How are you feeling during runs?

Slow. I'm not fast ever but it's hard seeing how much I've slowed down. I've been able to continue to keep my runs steady and am constantly adjusting my pace to be in tune with how I'm feeling.. Which has actually been really enjoyable. But AFTER my runs I feel amazing. Not just typical yay I worked out amazing... But 1st trimester it eliminated MS days I ran and and now I just feel 100% Me on run days again.

How far are you running? Miles per week?
4+ miles 3x a week plus walks... Running 9:30-12:00 pace but it's been hot and humid so it's enough to make me sweat

    Any upcoming races?
OB benched me for my upcoming Tough Mudder :( so just running for me and LO now.

Any advice regarding running from your OB that you'd like to share?

Same thing about being able to maintain a convo. But she's pretty encouraging of doing anything so long as I slow down when I need to.

Any tips for successful running in the 2nd tri that you'd like to share?

Nope :) FTM so working it out as I go.

  • How are you feeling during runs? Pretty good. I get winded easier, but other than that I feel good.

How far are you running?  Miles per week? I run about 3-4 mikes each time, so probably 12 miles a week. Just enough to exercise.

     Any upcoming races? Nope

Any advice regarding running from your OB that you'd like to share? I actually haven't talked to my midwife specifically about running, but for general working out she just told me to use common sense, pay attention to my body and not push it. So far so good,

Any tips for successful running in the 2nd tri that you'd like to share? FTM.

  • How are you feeling during runs? I feel great, but slow. I always feel better after running, except I am definitely getting more soreness  from less mileage than I did before

How far are you running?  Miles per week? Ha. I'm transitioning back from just walking for the last 8 months to running (my midwife gave me the ok since I have been a marathoner for years). I'm run/walking 4 miles 4 or 5 times a week

Any upcoming races? Nope. I thought about doing a 5K but I don't really want to spend the money on it. @lindseysquared, impressive you're doing a half!! If I hadn't gotten super out of shape before pregnancy, I'd definitely do some races.

Any advice regarding running from your OB that you'd like to share? My midwife just said to listen to my body and not get too hot, which is hard if you're running outside when the weather is still warm.

Any tips for successful running in the 2nd tri that you'd like to share? I'm also a FTM, but I'll second that a runner friend mentioned the Gabriella belt and said it's a necessity for later on.

  • 1) how do I feel during runs? Pretty crappy! Worn out, slow, out of breath (which I know is a HUGE NO NO!!) I'm ashamed to admit though I'm running 14-16 min miles. But that's also pushing a double stroller(not jogging stroller) with a 1 and 2 year old! So maybe I'm really just a fraud, too?! People probably walk faster than my sorry runs! but I do feel amazing and accomplished after my runs.
    2) how far are I running? Miles per week? Usually 3 miles each time, but depending on our schedules I'm only running 1-2 days a week.
    3) any races? No money's tight and I'm too slow to be really competitive:) someday I wanna do a half, though!
4)advice from OB? Nope, she supports my exercise, but she also says keep the hr below 140, so I don't really share info that my hr is above 140 just walking upstairs! She asks "are you still running?" I say "yep" that's about it!!
    5) tips for successful running in 2nd tri? No tips, but appreciate hearing others tips!

  • ow are you feeling during runs? slower and my groin is starting to ache

How far are you running?  Miles per week?  ran 3 on Thurs and less than 3 on the treadmill 1-2x a week.  Now that its getting cooler, I plan on jogging outside more

Any advice regarding running from your OB that you'd like to share?

Any tips for successful running in the 2nd tri that you'd like to share?  listen to your body and bring your phone in case you're not feeling well
  • @kerrigrooves - any tips on the groin pain?  I just started dealing with this.  I ran 4 miles this afternoon and right now I feel like my groin is in a constant cramp.

  • This post makes me really sad. Last pregnancy I ran until the day I went into labor. This time my hips hurt so bad I have trouble walking some days. I so wish I could run right now, I feel so much better about myself when I can get a run in every day.

Keep it up if you can ladies!
  • How are you feeling during runs?  good! slower than before, but relaxed! It's how I de-stress!

How far are you running?  Miles per week?12-20 miles depending on the week. I do at least 2/day, 6 days a week, but can do 4 if time allows.

    Any upcoming races? no way

Any advice regarding running from your OB that you'd like to share? run until the day you deliver! Just listen to your body.

Any tips for successful running in the 2nd tri that you'd like to share? This is my first pregnancy that I am running, and it's baby #4, so we'll see how it goes :)

  • How are you feeling during runs? During I feel pretty good, though running in the heat/humidity of Iowa gets pretty demanding so sometimes it's pretty draining.

How far are you running? Miles per week? 5k during my lunch break 3x a week on a partially wooded, hilly, gravel "fitness trail" my company has. My rest days between are to rebound from the ridiculous sacroiliac pain I get so I'll rack up my bike or walk the mile loop at a park near my house.

Any upcoming races? Next month I have my favorite fall race, a 5k where they give you hot cocoa afterwards.

Any advice regarding running from your OB that you'd like to share? They don't say much since I've always been a runner and did the Bix 7 miler at 3mos along at a pretty good clip.

Any tips for successful running in the 2nd tri that you'd like to share? Right now I have to remember to really flex my core to not get pain from things stretching and bouncing and to help keep my bladder from giving out. And stretch, stretch, stretch!
  • I'm feeling pretty good running these days. It feels like it takes longer for my heart rate to drop after I get over a hill.

I'm running with a training group so I have supported training runs twice a week and I can train for a half marathon while my husband trains for a full. Right now I'm running 4 days per week and Saturday's long run is only 4 miles but ramping up.

Upcoming races? I'm running a half on Sunday. I'm a bit nervous since I didn't finish it last year when I tried it, but it was 94 degrees at the start line last year so I'm hoping more favorable weather goes a long way. The training group I'm in is training for the blues half marathon in Jackson, MS on Jan 10. I want to run throughout my pregnancy so I decided to do the race just as a personal goal to finish it. My husband and mother in law are racing that day so I asked my father in law to run with me so I won't be alone.

Any advice? I like my OB but she hasn't been very helpful on the running front. When I asked about the January race she said I won't want to run that far at that point in my pregnancy.

I don't have any tips for a tri - I'm a weak swimmer and not much better on a bike so tri's are a long ways off for me.
  • How are you feeling during runs? Slooooooowwww.  My normal long run pace is 11-11:30.  I averaged 14 minute miles this Sunday, and averaged 12:15 a couple of weeks ago.  I keep getting really hot with all of this humidity and have to slow down or walk.
How far are you running?  Miles per week? This week will be 25, and next week I start to taper off before the race.  So it will be 15-20.
Any upcoming races?  Half Marathon on September 28th.
Any advice regarding running from your OB that you'd like to share?  Slow down your pace or take a walk break if you get too warm.
Any tips for successful running in the 2nd tri that you'd like to share?  Just get out there and do something.  No matter how fast, slow, short, or long it is.
