Old School Advice

I was reading through the cereal thread and thought about all the old school advice I would get from my parents, mother in law, aunts, etc. Some are pretty heinous. Others are good tips I hadn't even thought about and some are just old wives tales from their culture (I'm Laotian and my fiance is Puerto Rican)

Some of them included:
-Giving him whole milk at 4 months o.O
-Having him sleep on something that smells like me so I'm not always holding him
-Giving him a little water for hiccups
-Placing a piece of thread on the top of his head after I've licked it to stop hiccups
-Breathing hot breath on the top of his head when he chokes lol

Those are some that I could remember off the top of my head. What are some of the crazy things people have suggested to you?

Re: Old School Advice

  • My mom keeps suggesting corn starch to treat diaper rash. Had to finally tell her I looked it up and didn't like what I found.

  • My MIL is always full of advice. I've heard a bottle of water for tummy trouble, use olive oil for pretty much any skin issue, and she wants to feed him any time he makes a peep (even if he has just ate and I know he is full). I know there is more, but my sleepy brain can't think of other ones right now.

Out of curiosity, what did you find? DH's grandma suggested it to us...I asked our ped who said it's fine. Said to apply it by hand, vs shaking it out of the box and creating dust. I don't use it all the time. But if either of my girls is a little red, I'll spread a little on to absorb excess moisture and all redness goes away. But now I'm concerned that there's something bad about it. Oy...

  • DD has a herniated umbilical cord. MIL said back in her day they'd tape a coin over it to push it back in. No thanks.
  • Tape a quarter on her little outie to make it an innie. (Yeah, ok. That just sounds cruel.)

  • My step-MIL swears she was feeding her 2 month old cheerios. DH was speechless.

I guess this was pretty standard att some point??  I mentoined in the cereal thread about MIL feeding DH wheatabix (kind of the English equivalent to mini wheats cereal).  I've also been told by MIL to put my newborn in the crib at 7PM, shutt the door and don't come back until 7AM...wtf?  That is so cruel and I can't even comprehend it.

I also got the thread for hiccups advice from my cleaning lady yesterday. Nope. Just nope. I'm not making her even more angry. I lightly patted her back while she was frustrated and she fell asleep. Other than that no weird advice, but don't tell me how she wants to be held... She's still on sternal precautions from surgery and can only be scooped up. Quit telling me how to pick up my girl. Also my bitch fest for Monday. Sorry.

I know you didn't ask me. But, the thought is that their lungs could get damaged if they inhale the little dusty particles. This could cause asthma. Cornstarch is the main ingredient in baby powder. DS is prone to rashes and the only thing that worked to prevent them and treat them is baby powder. I just don't shake it by his face to create dust. I know that this is anecdotal. But, for us, open sores on tushes are worse than any potential risk.

I also found info that cornstarch can allow bacteria to grow which increases the chance of infection. Don't want that on top of a rash, LO has a bad enough one going on as is!

12 hours, not important because it is cruel regardless but, math.
Womp. Sorry. my brain doesn't function properly sometimes. My fellow Asians must be mortified lol
I sent out for DD's birth certificate but didn't bother sending the money they asked for. Whoops. It happens :p

Someone suggested this to me, too! No way am I putting tape on my daughter's stomach for who knows how many months!

Mil and FIL said I need to be giving her just straight water when she was just born. Like a few days. I told them babies get everything- water, nutrients, everything from breastmilk (formula for me now, begrudgingly.) and they still insisted. Needless to say I didn't heed their advice, and my husband asked the ped about it and she confirmed no water yet.

Mil and FIL put bumpers, blankets, stuffed animals in baby's crib before we got home. Looked cute- stuff was removed when I started putting her down for crib naps.

Mil and FIL said do rice cereal in the bottle. LOLNOPE.

Mil and FIL said we should try feeding her real food because she chews on her pacifier (she is two months old!) sooo no.

Mil and FIL said to sterilize bottles after every use. Pediatrician said it isn't necessary, but if I really felt the need to, to run them through the dishwasher.

    Oy.

I use coconut oil cause it's trendy. (Or because it's more solid so I can control it better. Whatevs)

I use the olive oil because... It's the only oil in the house and I haven't bought baby oil yet.
It's extra virgin, so that makes me feel better

  • My mom keeps asking the water thing too... I keep telling her LO doesn't need it and she keeps asking. She's coming with me to his 2 month appointment so I'll ask again so she can hear it from the pedi and stop bugging me about it.
