anyone else leaking colostrum?

I'm 18 and a half weeks and just started leaking from my left breast. My nip gets stuck to my shirt and it hurts like a bitch. I'm a FTM. Just asked my mom and she doesn't recall this happening to her. I am much more... blessed in that region than she. I know it's normal, just curious about others experiences. Wondering if it will continue for the rest of the pregnancy?

Re: anyone else leaking colostrum?

  • Yep I am producing colostrum. I'm surprised my son still nurses. When I was preg with him, the same thing happened and my daughter stopped nursing through my second tri, complaining it tasted funny. (Somewhere in the third tri she said it tasted fine again. Odd.)

  • No not yet. I never with my first either. Not all mothers do. I have been checking though lol. Strange that some do and some don't. Just one of those pregnancy quirks I suppose.

  • Yup, it's normal! You can use nursing pads to keep it from getting everywhere/sticking to you. It may come and go, or it may continue to leak until after you give birth (when it will leak a whole lot more!). As annoying as it is, it's definitely a good sign that you'll be able to nurse (although not leaking is NOT any indication of not be able....).
  • I'm a FTM and started leaking at 16 weeks. Breast size doesn't play into if you will leak out not. While I leaked quite a bit at 16 weeks, it seemed to stop for the most part since then.

  • Ftm here... Not happened to me yet, but glad to get the heads up on what may come!! Won't lie.... Sounds horrible! Slightly horrified lol
  • Both with DS and now I get a build-up of what I assume is colostrum and lotion in the cracks and crevices of my nipples. Because my nipples are too sensitive to scrub I usually end up cleaning it off with tweezers. Gross, but effective.
Also my right breast never stopped producing milk after DS. Not leaky or anything, but able to express a few drops if I give 'er a squeeze.
  • I'm full on leaking milk, but that's mostly because I had been breastfeeding my son and he only just weaned within the last two months.

  • My boobs would be able to produce a few drops if squeezed about a yr after finishing bfing DS. Takes a while to dry up completely.

Bahaha this exactly for me too...I seriously just laughed out loud because I figured no one could describe it that well but you hit it right on the head!
  • FTM mom here. Eek! Scary thought only b/c I imagine it happening at work or something and being mortified. I haven't had anything leak yet but I think I should go buy some pads just in case, so I can avoid any embarrassing moments...
  • I started leaking about a week ago, right at 18 weeks. It wasn't a lot, but like you, it made my nipples stick to my bra and it hurt so bad. The last couple of days I've used nursing pads in my bra and it does help but man I really didn't know my boobs would hurt THIS bad.
  • I didn't leak at all with my first pregnancy and I am also very well endowed. It's normal, but not everyone does.

  • and yeah, breast size has NOTHING to do with anything ! Mine are tiny!
  • haha, thanks for all of the info, ladies! sry I made it seem like I had the biggest tits in all the land -- not the case. my mom's are just mega small. hah. mine are also a bit too sensitive too wash, but i usually just grit my teeth and suffer through it. cleaning them with tweezers sounds terrifying... lol. i know i would end up pinching myself. :0

and luckily, it's only been happening at night while i'm at home. definitelt worried about it making a public appearance, though...
  • I haven't started leaking yet, but while I was at work I felt the same sensation I used to feel when I had a let down. I was so scared that I was going to leak everywhere, but nothing. I guess my boobs are gearing up for new baby :)
  • lauren.shap Mine leaked with both of my previous pregnancies, but until they were born it was never enough that would have soaked through a bra. (especially a lightly padded one) Having some breast pads on hand wouldn't be a bad idea, but I think it would be extremely rare if someone leaked so much for the first time and didn't have time to make it to the bathroom to put on a pad before leaking through your shirt.

After the baby is born, that's a different story. That's when you end up wearing one all day just in case because a sappy story, someone talking about babies, just the thought of your baby popping into your head can cause let down.
  • Warning: TMI/gross... I haven't noticed any liquid, but once in a while I notice dried-up stuff on my nipples, like crusty stuff.

me too! It grosses me out!! :-&

Is it weird that I kind of wish I was leaking? I think I'd feel reassured that everything's in working order.

I am not leaking either, I only know I'm producing colostrum because when I squeeze my boob that's what comes out instead of regular milk like it used to. I wouldn't know otherwise. It doesn't come out easily.

Same here.  It freaked me out at first, but coming to this thread made me feel better.  (FTM)  And now my breasts feel 1st trimester sore, but that could just be my imagination.
  • I'm a ftm and around my 17 or 18th week I began leaking and it's never been so bad I had to pull them off you should get some Breast pads.

  • FTM here and I started leaking about two weeks ago, at 17 weeks.  My mom thought it seemed really early, I'm also much more blessed than she there haha.  But I haven't been leaking much, mostly just when they get squeezed.  Sorry for the TMI, but I did wake up with crusty nipples this morning haha.  I must have rolled over at some point during the night.  But I did just order some nursing pads in case they start leaking more!
