Anyone else in here with it? My blood pressure has been going up since may I was in the labor and delivery unit for a week in May due to a kidney infection and now at my appointment yesterday they diagnosed me with the hypertension I go back on Friday for an ultra sound non stress test and another visit with the doctor I'm just so stressed about it because I had two miscarriages before this pregnancy I am just about 35 weeks I'm ready to have this baby just so I can finally breathe knowing everything is okay

Re: Gestational hypertension

  • They watch hypertension pretty close. The good news is that baby has an excellent chance if they were to take them early

  • It showed up my last pregnancy around 36 weeks. I was just closely monitored and then induced 10 days early. I have it again this pregnancy, but it showed up at 33 weeks and is a little higher. It usually stays in the 140/90 range, but I keep spiking in the morning to 145/100. Just today my doc sent in a prescription for a BP med to take in the mornings.
I have weekly appts and I have a BP monitor at home to check it a few times a day. I don't have any pre-e signs, but they are having me do a 24hr urine test just to be on the safe side.

  • Thanks as of now I'm still working full time my appointment yesterday last over an hour they took my bp 4 times so they spent more time just waiting to see if it would go down. But I was told I will go in twice a week every week for rechecks and a nst every Friday we will see how big baby is on Friday I am just very nervous
  • Had gestational hypertension around the same time my last pregnancy. It climbed up until before delivery then it was perfect while I was in labor. My midwives had me doing weekly NST's too. They put me on modified bed rest and my son was born without complications and with out induction. I practiced a lot with Hypnobirthing. I like to think the deep breathing and visualizations helped some with my BP. It certainly couldn't have hurt.

  • I was just diagnosed at 34 weeks after having it go up steadily for the last couple months.now have to do twice weekly nst and an ultrasound tomorrow and 24 hr urine sample.they said since its been going up for so long its too late to put me on medication because baby is used to getting a certain volume of blood.medication and sudden change Could shock baby and have a negative effect
  • I had it with both of my daughters, luckily my blood pressure has been perfect this time (fingers crossed it stays that way). With my first they were really cautious. I was sent to the hospital for monitoring and a 24 urine, I was not spilling protein so they let me go home on strict bed rest but had discussed keeping me in the hospital on bed rest. I had weekly Dr appointments and NSTs. But baby never showed distress so i was able to go 11 days past my due date and go into labor naturally.

With my second they were much more calm about it since I had a history of it without it turning into pre-e. I monitored my bp at home and was put on modified bed rest.

The guidelines I was given were to go to L&D if my bp got to 160/110, I got a severe headache, or started to see spots. Having hypertension will mean more monitoring but often it is not a problem. I would be prepared to be put on some level of bed rest though.

  • Mine came on suddenly with DS at 37 weeks.  No protein and no other signs of pre-e, but since I was considered full-term they felt it was safer to deliver him right then.  It's good that you're being monitored and the likeliness of it causing any catastrophic issues is very low since they will usually take the baby at the first sign of distress or if your hypertension turns into pre-e.  If anything, you may just need to be induced (or have a c-section, depending on your baby's position) earlier than you might have liked.

My BP has been fine so far this pregnancy, although I'm sure my anxiety will be through the roof in about two weeks...

  • Thanks guys I go tomorrow so we will see what they say...
  • I'm going thru a very similar situation. Bedrest has done wonders for my stress, anxiety and, consequently, my blood pressure. Try not to stress out more now that they are having you do all this extra stuff (way easier said than done)! Take lots of deep long breaths and visualize positive outcomes. Don't take calls that will cause you to get involved in drama and let all the people around you know your situation so they can approach you with less demands and not cause unnecessary stress. Good luck!
