Good lotion...

I have heard there is no way to prevent to stretch marks (actually on this board, I think; if you are going to get them you'll get them/they're genetic, etc etc)! Anyway, my belly and boobs have been very itchy lately and I'm sure it's just because everything is getting bigger.  Does anyone have a suggestion for a good lotion to use. I want it mostly to prevent the itching because I'm starting to feel like a gorrilla with all the scratching I do on my tummy. I just thought if anyone knew/has heard of something that is supposedly supposed to work for stretch marks I tried to kill 2 birds with one stone. If not I'll just stick with my Juergens

I worked for a dermatologist for several years. We got this question ALOT. His favorite recommendation was Cera-Ve cream. It isn't fru fru, but it works so well! It feels like heaven going on and has creamides in it which helps your skin maintain its moisture. You can find it at pretty much any major pharmacy. It isn't cheap compared to store brands, but it is worth it in my book!

  • Body butter by the body shop is good, as is natural shea butter.
  • Nothing can prevent them.  Don't fall for the fake claims.  Any good moisturizing lotion is a good bet to keep your skin from being dry/itchy.

  • I use the "Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula massage cream for Stretch Marks." It's a cream concentrate that lasts on my skin for 2 days before I need to reapply. It helps with the itchy skin really well! The cocoa butter smell isn't very strong, which I like since I have super sonic smelling abilities!
  • I've been using organic coconut oil! I use it all over except my face! It's the only thing working on my dry skin on my legs and thighs! It absorbs nicely and there is no smell! I also read that coconut oil is the best to use cause there's no chemicals or perfumes in it.
  • @krysmill I've heard all about coconut oil lately....seems very trendy! But where do you get it?
  • I use plain ole cocoa butter sometimes, and I also LOVE the Spa Sanctuary lotion.

  • I really like my vitamin e lotion from sams club. It works great for me in the winter when my skin gets really dry. I havent really had to use anything yet because this pregnancy is making me greasy. It is pretty cheap and it comes in a big jar so it lasts forever.
  • @Arduenser‌ I got mine at Kroger in the organic section! But I'm sure you can find it at any food store or whole foods! You just run the jar under hot water to melt it into an oil and a lil bit goes along way. I bought a medium size jar and I'm sure it will last me till the end of my pregnancy! I've read its really bad to put lotion on you breast that has perfume in it while your pregnant so I've been using the oil! My skin feels great.
  • I use BioOil.  I used it with DS1 and I think it helped immensly.  FWIW, my mom has tons of stretch marks and I never got but two little tiny ones on my low belly.  So I say it's NOT all in genetics/your mom.  just my 2c...
Correct.  It's also your father.  This is why one sibling may have them and the other does not.

  • I use Vaseline Intensive Moisture cream (not the regular lotion) on my belly to help with the itching.  Later on in my pregnancy with DS I had to have DH put it on my back too.  Didn't get any stretch marks, but my skin was sooooo itchy from the skin stretching.  The cream I use helps a LOT and applying it once a day was enough to keep the itch at bay.

  • I love the Earth Mama Angel Baby lotion for mamas like PP mentioned. It always helped with the itchiness.

For my daily lotion, I use Burts Bees unscented and I really like it.

I'm pretty sensitive to scents, and the Earth Mama lotion didn't bother me.

  • Burt's bees mama bee belly butter works wonders for my itchy belly and it doesn't have a strong scent.
  • I second the Cerave recommendation. I have extremely dry skin anyways and pregnancy has made it worse. Cerave is wonderful!

Remember coconut oil once the baby is born. It's awesome as nipple cream and works wonders on a diaper rash. Seriously, best diaper rash treatment ever.

I recommend organic. I know Trader Joes and Whole Foods definitely have it. But it's likely available in other grocery stores.

It's also wonderful for cooking. My DH uses it when he makes scrambled eggs and OMG are they delicious.

  • I agree with PPs about coconut oil. It's amazing, especially if you like the smell and taste. If you don't like how coconut smells or tastes (MH), you can get oil that doesn't have the offending odor/taste, like LuAnn. We use that for cooking (it's awesome for making popcorn!). I used the extra virgin kind for my skin, followed by Alba Botanica Extra Emollient body lotion. There are several different scents you can choose from, but I prefer the unscented. I also used BioOil throughout my first pregnancy, but since I don't know my biological parents, I don't have any idea whether my stretch marks turned out more or less pronounced. I haven't been as diligent about applying oils/lotion on my tummy or thighs this time around. Too lazy. :>

  • So far I'm loving Burt's bees mama bees belly butter! No strong smell and it keeps me very moisturized.
  • I use food grade coconut oil. I also use it as a main ingredient in homemade deodorant.

This pregnancy, I'm actually using The Honest Company's organic belly balm and am loving it. It goes on nicely, isn't greasy, smells wonderful, and moisturizes very well. Definitely recommend it.

I buy my coconut oil at Costco - It may be $22 but it is a HUGE tub.

ETA - It's organic  (I use it mostly for cooking)

  • I have some sort of oil but I forgot the name. I'm also using "Mixa Intensive" body cream. It's amazing for dry skin! I'm not sure if you can buy it in the US though, it's a French brand.
  • Renew cream by Melaleuca. Best product on the market. Also makes a safe lotion for baby's bottom. I trust it.
  • I was itchy during my last pregnancy too, and because I like spa smells I liked Belli oil. It smells like lavender.
