Traveling overseas

My husband and I already had a trip to spain and Portugal planned and paid for before we discovered the news. Luckily I will be 4.5 months when we leave, but it is 15 hours of travel and 2 weeks in foreign countries. Had anyone else traveled like this while expecting or have any advice?

Re: Traveling overseas

  • I did! My DH and I went to NY, London, and Paris when I was 6 months pregnant. I'm so glad we did that when we had a chance without kids. We had a great time!

Just be sure to get up and walk around the plane often when flying. When you're pregnant you can be more prone to blood clots, so you need to keep your circulation flowing. I even wore compression hose on the way back that helped. And bring snacks and water on the plane. Also, wear comfortable shoes, don't try to be all flashy and cute, haha. Talk to your doctor about your trip and see if they have any additional advice or precautions they want you to take. Otherwise, have a great trip!

  • We are headed to Spain, France, and Italy in a few weeks. My doctor seconded what others have said. She just stressed the importance of walking every so often during the flight and drinking plenty of water. Other than that, she wasn't concerned. I was able to schedule an extra appointment with her the day before I left just to check everything out as well.
  • That sounds awesome! You should be fine. Ditto what PP said about the water and walking around on the plane. We traveled to Hawaii when I was pregnant with DS2 and it was great.

  • I'm heading to South Africa in 17 days and I will have a 14 hour flight and then another 12 hour flight. I asked my OB and her advice was the same as what PPs have said: lots of water, walk around every 2 hours, compression hose. Another OB said aspirin... But I'm checking on that one?!

  • I went to Paris when I was 3 months pregnant.  It was a lot of fun!  Just listen to your body and remember you may not be as nimble and energetic as you were pre-pregnancy (we walked so much and I should've probably rested a little more!)  Also, I was a little more careful about what I ate - just check cheeses, veggies, water, etc. Have fun!!

I'm going to Serbia in October and plan to buy compression hose for the plane. I'm going with a college group and our instructor advised us to check with our health insurance to make sure it covered out of the country type doctors visits.

  • FI and I will be flying to my hometown, St.Louis, about a 12 hour trip from where we are in Switzerland in a few weeks. I'm going to wear compression socks and just remember to get up and walk around the plane as often as I can. Make sure to drink lots of water while flying!
  • I haven't, but a great book I'm reading (about multiples pregnancies but still) says that travel isn't the issue. It is only an issue because travel days are usually filled with stress, rushing, not enough rest and skipping meals and liquids. Focus on those things and you'll be fine!

  • I'm going to Italy tomorrow and we'll be gone for 2 weeks (I'm 15 weeks). What everyone else has said is spot on. Also, get an aisle seat so you're not climbing over the whole row to get up. My midwife also said go pee when you need to, because she has seen people come back with UTIs because they held it during busy travel days. Have a good trip!

  • My company's European headquarters is in Lisbon. Send me a private message if you want some tips. I love it there, you'll have a great time!
  • What everyone has said, plus aisle seat!
Make sure to pack a ton of snacks in your carry on so that you are eating every couple of hours, get up and walk around every couple hours, and don't be afraid to ask the flight attendants for water whenever you need it.

When we flew a few weeks ago, the lady across the aisle from me asked if I was expecting just based on the amount of times I got up to use the bathroom! :p
