34 Weeks and Baby might be breech

Hi there,

Just had my check-up today and all is normal, EXCEPT - doctor thinks baby may be breach - she wants to do an ultrasound right before my 36 week appt to see what we're dealing with. She said no need to do sooner as she says the baby can still flip on its own and if we do it next week, still may flip by 36 weeks. Does this sound right to folks?

They had not checked before as there have been no high risk signs and they feel up through 34 weeks baby is moving, so one position today may be different tomorrow.  Plus in past appts heartbeat was strongest down near pelvis - so seems almost like baby was sitting right and moved. Not sure If I put too much pressure on pelvis area this week due to exercise and caused the baby to move or something else. Sigh... I know baby can still flip but much less time for it to do that now.

Anyone else having this problem?

Kaiser said they don't worry about position until 36 weeks.
I was just in l&d for monitoring Monday and the doc said there's no reason to worry about position as baby can easily flip until then.

My midwife encouraged me to spend time on my hands and knees, head resting down on my hands/arms, each day. I also started seeing a chiropractor last week, for fetal position and just general alignment, etc. Well on Sunday night, after about 10 minutes on my knees with my head on my pillow under which I'd shoved my arms, I lay down on my left side and felt some crazy movement (almost frantic...). I closed my eyes to just feel him moving and tried to decide whether all that insanity warranted a call to the midwife. He settled down after about 5 minutes, and the next day at the MFM, I was told he had turned head down. Not sure if it was the chiropractor, the hands and knees time, or just him turning when he was ready, but I say try some cat/cow yoga positioning each day (good for your back anyway) and see what happens by 36 weeks. :)
Will give the hands and knees position a try. Is it just knees and then hands down or do you need to arch back, etc? I'm not much into Yoga, so don't have the visual. Thanks for the input - may help and may even try a chiropractor. I have been doing inversion - leaning over couch with hands on floor and head upside down on floor at least once a day. May start doing multiple times a day.

Thanks for the tip - I will take a look. I would say porobably my stress level over this is higher than it should be - mostly because there's so much other stress. August has been a pretty tough month. Hoping Sept. will be better. Thanks to all for input and advice!

    ------------------------------
Don't arch your back down toward the floor, because that will make your tummy put extra strain on your back. Either keep your back straight, or alternate between keeping your back straight and arching your back upwards like a startled cat.

In other words, do these but skip the middle one:

What I did a lot of too (mostly this, actually) was this sort of pose:

  • Also, I had never seen a chiropractor before last week, but I have been really impressed by how it made me feel (have had 2 appts thus far). My hips hurt so much less and I already have better range of motion in my neck. I know I'm only planning to go for the duration of my pregnancy and maybe a couple postpartum appts, but it's tempting to want to keep it up!

  • My baby is breech and I'm only 32 weeks and while my doc told me not to worry she does want me to start doing exercises to encourage baby to move. I'm going to be doing the pelvic tilts that Emerald mentioned, and try the ironing board thing that my doc told me to do. You prop an ironing board against the couch and lay against it with your head on the floor (on pillows of course) and your butt in the air on the ironing board, you can also put pillows behind your back.

My doc said that if she is still breech in two weeks we will look into acupuncture (I already see a chiropractor). Then if still breech at 36 weeks we'll talk external version.

I'm trying not to worry and know there is still time but it's hard not to worry when breech pretty much means scheduled c section and I'm hoping for my third med free natural birth. Having a plan of action and getting started now helps me not worry since I know I'm doing everything I can.

Thank you- this helps a lot. I'm actually going in for an ultrasound tomorrow - I thought about it and realized why wait - so what if I have to do 2 ultrasounds, just one extra co-pay. This way we confirm if what my doctor felt was right or if I'm not breech. Plus if I am, I can start doing some of the other yoga poses recommended that they say not to do if you're unsure because you could flip the baby the wrong way from the right way. Fingers crossed.

All good stuff - I'm 2 weeks ahead of you, so just left a message for my old acupuncture person (haven't been to her in ages) - I know she can recommend a chiropractor too if needed. Going in for an ultrasound tomorrow to confirm - as I was reading stuff like the ironing board can turn the baby the wrong way if you're not breech. Also - I don't have an ironing board (I hate ironing), so will have to look into finding a friend that does.
