Does anyone else's lo sick your nipple in like slurping a spaghetti noodle? Any suggestions how to correct this? I put a call into the lactation consultant at my hospital but I haven't heard back yet.
It's only at latch on. She sucks and swallows like she should, but she will not open wide for a latch. She makes her mouth a little o, then slurps me in. Ouch!!
Lurking from oct 13. My daughter did this until i saw a lactation consultant who made sure i waited for wide open mouth even if it took many tries. She said start trying before the baby is frantic since it might take time and you need to relatch if it is hurting. She also had me pull her chin down to help her learn to open wide. It took about a week for her to learn to do it all the time but it felt better to feed her by the next day
Yeah. It cracks me up but also hurts like a mofo so as adorable as it is I have to pop her off.
FWIW, like @Elbug's LO DD has an upper lip tie and posterior tongue tie that's getting clipped soon. She's been a champ at adapting though here in the past few weeks, thankfully, while we wait on the ENT referral.
The LC would sort of hold DD's head back (reminded me of how people handle venomous snakes) and force her to open wide. Then you shove as much nipple as you can in. It does not seem very natural, but once they get the latch down, it doesn't look so weird.
I just wanted to say that I did what @brachysira mentioned (holding chin open) and it actually worked. I figured she'd fight too much and I wouldn't be able to move her chin but I was wrong! And I've also learned it's totally worth it to relatch and wait for the open mouth to latch again. Really hoping DD learns a good latch eventually, maybe we won't have to get her tongue tie re-snipped after all... or I can at least save my nips in the mean time!
