Cloth Diapering

Intro and Question

Hello all! I am a FTM due in December and will be cloth diapering. My sister has cloth diapered her two kids so I have been able to get some advice (as well as some nice hand me downs) from her and I am hoping to get more advice and knowledge from you ladies. I am building my stash and right now have an some bumgenius pockets (one size) as well as some thirsties dup wraps in a size one and some flips. I am getting ready to get some prefolds for the covers but wanted your advice. I am interested in getting the thirsties hemp prefolds and my sister told me to just get the size 2's and fold them down to fit instead of buying the two sizes. Do you ladies think the size 2's would be too bulky to have at first? I am all about saving money but I also want to make sure my caregiver and husband can effectively use these on a daily basis. Thanks!

Re: Intro and Question

  • I don't see a problem folding down a larger insert. But you could also just buy the smaller ones and use them as a doubler insert also

And just so you know, the bg pockets will not fit a newborn.

  • Hemp is great, but it's also pricey. If you're trying to save money you could look into some flats (or flour sack towels). They can be folded to fit snugly around a baby. Or pad folded like an insert for later.

  • I feel like anything larger than newborn prefolds is going to be really bulky on a newborn.  But I'm not familiar with thirsties sizes.

  • I don't have experience with Thirsties prefolds. Whether or not the size 2s are too bulky would depend on how many layers are sewn together. I think it's the same hemp jersey in their pocket inserts, which is trim and very absorbent. So I can vouch for the fabric being good quality, I just don't know whether a size 2 would work on an NB. If your sister has experience with them, then by all means go with that.

However, as PP mentioned, hemp is a bit spendy. You can get GMD or Imagine cotton prefolds, or bamboo cotton if you prefer, for much less. Even more economical is flats.

You can stuff prefolds and flats into some pocket diapers to make them a bit easier to handle for YH and caregiver.

Excellent work @AFwifelife.  With that information, I can tell you that it would be way too bulky for me.  I know people do it, and the bulk bothers mama more than it bothers baby.  But that would just be overkill in size and absorption.

ETA: I agree with @yellowlily2013.  Flour sack towels work great, you can get 5/$5 at wal mart.  I used them a lot for my newborn.  I still use them on days when she's having poopsplosions (because I ate something she can't tolerate) because I know they will hold in the poo better than just a best bottom insert.
