Midwife Center?

Hello all...I'm a new kid on the block, couple years ago I was a Knottie and now we're starting to think about adding to the family! We live on the east end, and on my way to work I often pass the Pittsburgh Midwife Center...is anyone familiar with it? I'm thinking of checking it out.

Re: Midwife Center?

  • I was a patient of the midwife center and I absolutely adored them.  They have a beautiful birth center and they treat you very well and are very competent to handle situations that may occur there.  Highly recommend them.  Sorry for my rambling I'm very tired.

  • Went for an orientation at the midwife center and we are really leaning towards them for our first baby.  Any others with experience/advice that have used them? We loved the rooms and felt they would provide a much more personalized care. Our biggest concern is with how far away we live.  We are about an hour from the strip and I know that you typically do not get to spend the night there and as a first time mom I'm not sure how I'll feel about an hour drive shortly after giving birth.

I know there is an option to delivery at Magee with the midwives as well. Has anyone gone this route?

  • I have 3 friends that used the Midwives at Magee and really liked it there.  I am too nervous not to be at the hospital.
Excited for our new little one!  Two Angels remain in our prayers.

  • Correction! I meant Mercy.  I have heard good things about Magee's midwives, was also curious about midwife delivery at Mercy.

I'm pretty sure that the midwives at the Midwife Center are the only all midwife practice that has hospital rights at Mercy. The only other option might be to find an OB practice that has a midwife in their practice that you could potentially use. But if you went that way, you would still see mostly the OB's for appointments and possibly the birth. There wouldn't be a guarantee to always see the midwife.

I'm using the Midwives at Magee and absolutely love them! I can't recommend them enough.

I delivered my daughter at the Midwife Center and it was such a good experience!  The care I received during PG was wonderful and the birth was beyond wonderful.  It was so nice to labor and deliver in an environment where I didn't have to fight for the items on my birth plan (they were all standard procedure at the midwife center) and it was great not needing to deal with triage or waiting rooms when in labor.

I loved going home right afterwards.  I stayed at the hospital for 3 days after my son's birth and it was a PITA.  So much better to recover at home in my own bed!  I, personally, would have been fine with a 1 hour drive after the birth, honestly the soreness didn't kick in for a day or so, so the drive probably would have been worse later.  The drive during labor was the worst (mine was only 15 minutes too) but you'll have that whether you deliver at the Midwife Center or Magee.

Anyone who wants to know more about the Midwife Center, feel free to PM me.  I would be happy to answer questions or provide additional raves!

  • I'm using the midwife center!

I got to be present at my sister's two births there, and they were both fabulous experiences. I love the freedom it gives you to labor however you need to.. moving around, in the tub, etc... they are so supportive and nurturing. I encourage everyone to look into it if you're able to!
