Folic Acid and Calcium

Everyone tells me I should start taking the two. So, I just went food shopping and bought them, but I am pretty nervous to just pop anything. Should I just use them as directed OR wait until my first Dr appt. on Monday?

Re: Folic Acid and Calcium

  • Are you already taking a multi??

  • Take them. They're recommended for women of childbearing age. Folic acid reduces the instances of some birth defects & the calcium basically protects you from osteoporosis later in life because baby will pretty much zap the calcium right from your bones to get what he/she needs.
  • I know folic acid is definately reccomended...calcium I guess if you don't think you're getting enough?

  • If you aren't already taking a multi take the folic acid asap, it's so important.

how much folic acid does it have? ?you need at minimum 400 mcg?

  • Thanks girls. Hopping right on it!
  • I take the One A Day Women's vitamin and a calcium each day as a supplement.  They are both really easy to tolerate.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • as stated Folic acid is a MUST to prevent neural tube defects (spina bifida) and 1800 mg /day of calcium are recommended during pregnancy, few people get that much from their diet. Have you looked at a pregnancy book?

I have yes. But I didn't know if I should take anything before going to the DR's.?

  • I would definitely start taking the folic acid...I took 800 mcg daily for a few months prior to TTC and then switched to prenatal vitamins after my BFP.

  •  Never wait to see a doctor. Some people don't see their doctor until 8 or 9 weeks. You can buy an otc prenatal vitamin.
