Breastfeeding

thrush or reg learning to breastfeed pain?

LO is 3 weeks old, I have some cracked nipples which are also pretty pink (i do pump so maybe that's why?) After I breastfeed my nipples feel itchy and sometimes I have pain in my breasts. I also have some pins and needles feeling in my breasts which I attribute to milk building up for the next feed (maybe?)

I've adjusted my position for my left side which has helped the pain during feeds and she seems like she latches deeper (mind you it's day 1 with this position)

how long is the learning to breastfeed pain and cracked nipples and such supposed to last? Or am I in thrush territory now?-she shows no sign of thrush

As a side note - I am anemic, I was on an antibiotic shortly after delivery due to a uterine infection and i am on biological meds which lowers my white cell count..

Re: thrush or reg learning to breastfeed pain?

  • I had similar type of pains around the same times as you. For me it was just getting used to breast feeding, even went to the doc because it was so painful and I was sure something was wrong. Nothing was wrong, just my body getting used to it. DD was about 5-7 weeks old I believe when the pain finally went away, she's now 14 weeks old. It does get better and easier :-) Hope you feel better!

  • I was in the same boat. My LO was a horrible nurser in the beginning to I just chalked it up as the normal pain you get as you get used to it. It didn't occur to me until 2 weeks later after I saw an LC that it was thrush caused by me being on an antibiotic a few weeks prior. My LO showed no signs either because we were using a nipple shield at the time so he never came in direct contact with my breast. I would contact an LC and let them know how you are feeling and what's going on to get a second opinion.

  • I put an email in to my midwives, today breastfeeding was extremely painful to the point i had to stop feeding on the left side (right side is fine). I may go ahead and pump all feedings tonight. Hopefully I'll get some answers soon.
