Bridesmaid dress help!

So I'm 20 weeks now and will be 25 weeks by the wedding date. When do y'all think is the latest I should go get my dress tailored? I tried calling and asking the tailor but I wasn't getting anywhere with what little English she spoke. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I use to work for a bridal store and we use to recommend 3 to 4 weeks before the event to get tailored and 4-6 wks to order a dress.
  • Scratch that I'll be almost 28weeks. I don't know where my brain is hiding today! Haha
  • Awesome thank you for the help!
  • Oh yeah I see how that could be an issue. I think your bump will make the front come up a tad bit short. Did they make you order it a million sizes bigger? I went from a six to a twelve. My self esteem wasn't ready for that blow at the time.
  • This is ours but in a dark blue, hopefully it'll help hide my other flaws!
  • I would wait till the last time possible, like if the tailor needs 5 days then go 6 days before. I feel like my belly randomly grew and it was very unpredicable.
  • I'd wait as long as possible, so ask your tailor how much time they need, and schedule accordingly.

The thing I am concerned about is that band around the waist.... I'll be just over 23 weeks pregnant when the wedding happens...
This is my concern too. I will be 24 weeks and while I'm not IN a wedding, I am going to one and cannot find anything to wear :( Maternity dresses will still look a little baggy but regular dresses seem to all have a damn band in the wrong spot.

  • She said to give her just a week but that just seems like such a time crunch. If it isn't done by then l'd be in so much trouble. I guess I'll give her about a week and a half to get it done. I'll just tell her to try and leave a little wiggle room. I'm afraid I'll need it brought in, in the chest and taken out even more in the belly/hips area.

When is the wedding you're in?  I just got a dress on Ebay.  It was $50 but I figure I can sell it again afterward.

  • A site called Thredup has some cute maternity clothes, you might be able to find a really cheap dress you like there.
  • It's like an online plato's closet but better I think.
  • @caitylady12 - Can you try going to see her in person?  Maybe when she sees you she'll understand, or someone there can help her.

  • For my wedding my GF was pregnant n my tailor had her come the week before cuz u change so much from week to week.. n u wanna b comfortable..
  • I'm in a wedding sept 6. This is the dress I'm wearing. My seamstress didn't want to do the alterations until 2 weeks before. Good thing too bc chest was big 2 weeks before but fits now.

  • I just went through this. I waited probably just a little too late because I had to pay extra for the "rush order". I gave it 2-3 weeks before I needed it, so I thought it would be enough, but with busy wedding season I guess not. She did a FANTASTIC job, however!
  • Also I have 3 more weddings this year (6 total in 2014, phew!) and I just got a darling black & white maternity dress on clearance at Pea in the Pod.

What about a wrap dress?  I have been wearing them a lot lately, and I like that they can be fitted up top and then flowly over the belly and the rest

That's a good idea. Have you found one recently?

  • I have nothing more inspiring to add to the conversation than Good Luck, Ladies!!

I was in a wedding at 8.5 months pregnant with DS1, and it was terrible. My dress was huge, I was huge, and it was ridiculously hot. Hope your experiences are better!!
  • I'm in a wedding in Oct too! My dress has an empire waist thankfully. I was going to call this week and try to get into a schedule with a tailor.

  • Good ideas! Im in a wedding late November and already have the dress. It's a wrap luckily but I will have to add more fabric or a slip. Any other ideas? I will be 33 weeks! Ah!
  • I was in a wedding at the end of July and the seamstress waited until the week before the wedding to do the alterations (she works out of her home, she's retired from a bridal shop nearby). It was a good thing I waited because I had actually LOST weight and needed the dress taken in. Because my belly was big the dress did fit a little awkwardly. I suspect you probably haven't lost weight though, being this far along. Good luck! Really my advice to anyone in this situation is don't expect perfection (I mean after all these dresses aren't usually designed with pregnancy in mind) and find a seamstress who does work on the side (in her home), usually so much cheaper and flexible with scheduling. I found mine through word of mouth.

ps. My very first post on here (this pregnancy) was a crazy panic about my bridesmaid dress not fitting.
  • Where did you get your dress from? David's bridal had no problem exchanging mine for another size. They even said they would do it again rush delivery if it didn't fit by the time the wedding gets closer. Mines just guaranteed to not fit in one place and fit perfectly in the other. It's a fitted style dress so if it fits my belly it'll be huge in my chest/back area no matter how my chest grows, which it hasn't at all so the strap to the dress and the whole top just fall down and sit on my belly. Lol
  • I just did this. Wedding is this Thursday! My dress came in weeks ago, I waited until just under 2 weeks before the wedding to go to the tailor, she said I did a great job of guessing size. My chest has gone from 34B to 36F now at 22 weeks, and the dress is srrapless. I had her leave a touch of space around the bust, and good thing too, because when I went in to try on the dress last Friday it just fit but I have plenty of room to breathe. I am huge, everyone guesses that I'm 7 months, so I'm lucky I went bigger on the dress size. I would say no more than 3 weeks before the wedding - leave space if you think you might need it. Good luck!
  • I just stood up in a wedding yesterday, I'm 21 weeks. I had my dress altered at a good dry cleaner and went in just over a week before the wedding. Glad I waited because last few weeks have definitely grown. Those places usually get it done fast, but you may want to stop in too see what their turnaround time is.
