Increased amniotic fluid at a/s scan

Everything went well with my u/s, except that they said there was more amniotic fluid than there should be, which could indicate a chromosomal problem. I had the Pamorama test done that came back normal, but I need to decide by this week if I want to proceed with the amniocentesis. I am a worrier, so I really want to get a definite answer, which the amnio does, but there is a slight chance of miscarriage with the procedure. Has anyone else had increased amniotic fluid? I need advice ASAP! Thanks everyone :)

  • I had excess fluid my whole pregnancy. My numbers were in the high 20s sometimes low 30s. I chose not to do any of the tests. The doctors just watched it and checked the baby more than usual. The last month and a half I had ultrasounds every week and my son came out perfect.
  • My SIL had a ton a extra fluid and a perfectly normal pregnancy/baby boy. I wouldn't opt for the amnio if you had a panorama.

  • Thank you all so much! Your input helped me A LOT! There was very little information I could find on the internet about having extra amniotic fluid....I guess it's more common to have low amounts. So all your experiences and advice helped to calm me. Thanks again!

  • If you would not abort either way, there's no reason to get an amniocentesis.

If you would, well then it's up to you to weight the risks and decide what's right for you. I personally have a friend who works in the medical field who had an amniocentesis done, which indicated that her baby would have Downs Syndrome. I'm sure you can see where this is going: Her kid is fine.

If you'll look in "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth," she references a few "Wrongful Life" lawsuits involving low-risk parents who were NOT offered an amniocentesis and ended up having babies with chromosomal disorders, who then turned around and SUED their care providers for not offering the test in the first place. As a result, more and more practitioners are inclined to offer the test to more and more patients, whether they truly believe they need it or not. It's a great way to cover one's ass.

I'd say if your Pamorama test is normal, you're fine.

  • I had extra amnio with DS.  He was fine.  You've already had one test, I personally wouldn't do another.

Many people get testing done in order to be able to give their child the best start possible from birth. It's not always about ending the pregnancy.

Totally agree, but there are several tests available which carry less risk than the amniocentesis. Nuchal translucency screening and blood tests are a pretty good choice, IMO.

Thank you so much....this really helps me a lot. I am feeling more calm now about everything! And DH basically told me the same thing about them probably just covering their ass by offering the amniocentisis, so that makes sense after you explained it. Thanks again!

Good to know. Thanks so much for your reply. I need to know that there are others out there that had this, because it was difficult to find any info about it online. Thank you again!!!

  • A coworker of mine had polyhydroaminos (too much fluid) at 18 weeks with her last pregnancy. She ended up having some preterm labor that had to be stopped and some of the extra fluid was drained. She delivered a very healthy little girl at 38 weeks and everything was fine.

Just an FYI for anyone that may stumble upon this thread.  Extra amniotic fluid does NOT automatically equal polyhydramnios.
