Do baby's initials really matter?

My husband and I have been talking about the middle name to go with Harper for awhile now. We both loved Olivia, but realized that would make her initials HO. Sometimes it seems like that's a dumb choice to make, but other times I'm like who really cares. But several ppl we've told the name to have mentioned Ho right away. I guess it's really HOH with our lady name...at least our last name isn't Evans or something. Anyways other name we're considering is Harper Paisley. Any thoughts on either?

  • @TXUltraRunner‌ Lol probably never to be honest. I just don't want it to seem like a joke, but I'm sure if some classmate wants to make fun of my kid they'll find something else to do it about.
  • It would probably not even cross my mind. Chances are that no one will notice, especially kids if you are worried about teasing in school.

  • I don't think HoH is bad... HOE maybe.... But as long as it's not a cuss word, who cares?

Plus.... I'm partial to the name Olivia ;)

  • I think first and last would matter more. I sometimes have kids use their initials on art projects at school but then it would be HH. No big deal!

kids will ALWAYS find something to tease about. I wouldn't worry about it. Now if you named your kid something like Tucker, then I'd say worry about teasing.

  • I say no, DH says yes. Our last name is P and I loved the names Parker and Peyton but he doesn't like them simply because the initials would be PP. I never made fun of someone because of their initials but he insisted him and his classmates did so... we're still in discussion. :) If you really wanted to monogram you could always pick the kind that has the letter of your last name big in the center with the first and middle initial on the sides. So it'd be more H H O. I don't know if that makes it better but there's that!

We honestly didn't realize until after we really settled on DS's name, and really fell in love:.. His initials are BS... Hoping he will find humor in it when he is older lol

Edit: his full initials are BRS, but all I think about is all the things you initial with first and last. His name makes an opinion on all things lol

  • I tend to agree that first and middle initials don't matter, but you might want to consider that many email handles are first initial, middle initial, last name.  I have several (some by choice, some not) that are that way for me.  It may be just because my last name is short.  Not a determining factor, but something to keep in mind.
  • HOH really wouldn't bother me at all.  I probably wouldn't give my kid initials like ASS or something but other than that, I'm not too worried.  Mine is going to be AMC... DH keeps calling her AMC theater...  X_X

  • There are some unfortunate initial combos, but overall it wouldn't influence my decision if I was in love with a name.

  • I've been thinking about this. One of the middle names we're considering for this baby would make her initials MAL. "Mal" means "bad". I known I'm probably over-thinking it because it's not like it spells a dirty word, but I definitely take initials into consideration.

  • Meh. Hoh isnt anything I'd think twice about.

I think if it's an OBVIOUS unfortunate combo (ASS, PMS, HOE, etc), it would probably bug me and I would steer clear

Unless it would bother you, I don't see an issue with HOH.... but it's up to you and how you feel.

My initials (with my married name) are now KNK..... let's just say, I'm glad my middle name doesn't start with a K.

Just tell your daughter she can't marry a guy with the last name of "E" if she decides to change her name ;)  Easy-Peasy. (I kid)

  • As long as it isn't an OBVIOUS word with First (F) Middle (M) and Last (L) where FML and fLm for monogramming doesn't spell something clearly terrible, I think you're in the clear.

I got teased based on my initials a bit as a kid, but nothing too bad.  But I wouldn't want ASS or DIK or SEX.  Those would be rough.

  • I have never used my first and middle names a initials without the last name. It's always been either first middle last or first last. Usually first last. So the initials would be HH or HOH.
When I see HOH I think Santa!
  • I feel much better. It shouldn't be an issue for us, I just needed to hear other ppl say it didn't sound bad and now I realize it will barely be noticed.

@SpaceGirlSpiff‌ ha!! She holds her fate in her own hands at that point of marriage lol. She can be hoe or no, up to her :)

@kc192‌ I laughed at PP, Peyton is a favorite name of mine, it's a shame it won't work for you haha!

@12chachacha‌ Oooh now I will think of Santa too!! That's a good spin on it, can't wait for Christmas this year!

  • My friend growing up had the initials MTV and it was awesome. Harper Olivia is lovely and you should go for it.
  • my initals were EZ, no one in school noticed.
I am SO jealous!  I came here to post that with my initials (also EZ...I think we need to chat b/c I also go by Lizzy), high school was horrible.  I'd walk through the dining hall and the guys would shout "EZ!" It was not a fun nickname or one that brings back fond memories.  I've asked my parents why on earth they would do that to me, and my mom didn't notice and my dad liked Elizabeth too much to care.

Please pay attention to initials.  I don't think HOH is a big deal, but our last name starts with an O, and you can bet that if we have a girl, her name will not begin with an H.

  • We were sensitive about it because my husband was berated by a home ec teacher in front of the whole class in middle school for monogramming his initials (DIC) on a project as he was told to do because she thought he was trying to be funny and use an inappropriate word.  Add K to the end of his initials ....

  • when I saw the title I was gonna reply with "well not really, but if it was something like HOE I would probably think twice." Then lol'd that your baby is gonna be a hoh
  • I guess it matters if you're like really really into monogramming
With a monogram it would be hHo. ;)

I love how when I brought up initials making a difference there was a big uproar, but when it's someone else, it's okay for them to consider what initials might spell.
  • Second voice for the email name being holastname@companyname.com... But depending on what your full last name is it might not look weird or obviously seem to spell ho.

  • My nieces used to have all of their stuff that traveled to daycare (sippies, etc) labelled with their 3 letter initials, but I believe that was family choice, not daycare mandated.

I have never had an employer that used my middle initial for email - first initial last name, first name last name, or first name last initial.

  • My name was supposed to be Amanda Summer until my mom had a thought that I might marry a Smith or Sampson and changed the Summer to Leigh... I was kinda bummed about that once I knew the story. I would have loved to have ASS as initials as a married adult. I personally don't think initials matter unless at birth they start as an ASS or a HOE :/

  • My son's initials are MOB.   His first and middle names are very important family names.

Yeah it might bother some people but to us the names themselves were more important then the what the initials spell.

Plus he is kind of a bad ass, so MOB fits pretty well.  LOL

  • U have a last name to add to that.. no one just puts their first n middle initial when asked to put initials u do all 3.. I would put JLU not JL..
  • HOH shouldn't be a big deal. I doubt anyone will ever notice. Monogrammed stuff might be something to avoid, but we J 15 moms don't seem to be big fans of monograms anyway! If you love the name I would stick with it. Hopefully baby girl doesn't decide to marry someone who has E for a last name though!

  • If she puts her initals it would most likley be HH, very few people use their middle .
  • Harper Olivia is too beautiful of a name to pass up. Kids will always find something to tease about, but I don't think HOH looks bad at all.

  • My initials used to be TNT by the way and yes I am dynamite :)

  • i don't think just first and middle matter, and HOH really isn't a big deal.  HOE, ASS, FUK, etc would be different.  kids are going to find something to tease other kids about in general, so HOH isn't really a big deal.

    DS is RAD.  lol
