Cloth Diapering

Due in Nov-- want to cloth diaper

Hi--
I'm due in the beginning of Nov and would like to cloth diaper. I thought I would do all pocket diapers, but after visiting a local boutique-- the owner convinced me to get pockets, all in 2s, maybe a few all in ones, just have a stash if different kinds. That being said-- has anyone used the all in 2s from Best Bottoms? If so, what kind of insert, (I will not start using until baby is at least 8lb-- I won't buy newborn cloth) TIA

  • Ooh thanks!! Yes-- I was thinking about doing inserts (and not prefolds etc). As for newborns-- I was told they are expensive and won't be in them for that long to really make up a price difference between cloth and disposable-- is that true? Also the hospital I deliver at will give me a ton of NB diapers.
  • A newborn stash can be resold to recoup much of your investment. I prefer flats on a newborn over prefolds, but that's just me. You could do a great newborn stash with covers, flats, prefolds and fitteds (for easy overnight changes) with covers for I under $150 and resell it. I bought most of my newborn stash used and resold it when I was done for practically the price I paid.

I did use disposables for the first few weeks overnight because I didn't have any fitteds, just flats and prefolds. I could believe the amount of garbage from just overnight diapers!

Your hospitalight let you take "a ton" of diapers home, but you'll be going through 70-80 changes a week, so if you want to do disposables plan on buying most yourself, the hospital won't be giving out that many! There is nothing wrong with disposables during the newborn stage, really, it's just the cost of newborn cloth isn't really a factor like many think.

  • Which newborns do you like the most? Best?
  • For newborns, GMD workhorses and newborn sized covers are awesome. Snappied prefolds are great, too, once you get the hang of the folds. Flats are really absorbant, and cheap, although a lot of people don't like folding.

The store was right to encourage you to buy a variety. Not all styles work on all babies. I decided I would love AIO's before LO was born, and would hate prefolds. Turns out that I hated AIO's. I also dislike pockets. I didn't even consider Workhorses, and they turned out to be my favorite, and I still use them almost exclusively.

  • For newborn I used Nicki's (imagine?) prefolds and fitteds, they worked great.  I liked the blueberry covers and RAR covers best.  Although that might just be bc they were cutest.  The aplix wasn't good on the thirsties I had, so they weren't my favorite.  But I've heard their new aplix is good.
