TTMA Toddler Beds

Exciting Parenting topic, comin' atcha!

No, but for real, I need to get DS out of my bed and off of my boob at night. Well, mostly the second part, but I don't see that happening without also the first.

I don't really have much room in my bedroom for another bed, so that's my first dilemma. I will be moving out come December, and am hoping to find a 2 bedroom just outside of the city and closer to where I work, if I can afford it. Should I just wait until then? Do you think the shock of a move coupled with the shock of suddenly being in his own bed would be too much? I wouldn't move him to his own room until after he's gotten used to being in his own bed.

Second dilemma is cost. I would need to find one really, really inexpensive, and don't know where to look to find the best deal. Any suggestions there?

I have no idea what I am doing, and am really unqualified to parent a toddler. I need your help :-S

Honestly, after having two toddler beds, I would skip it and get a twin for him when you move.
This does sound like a preferable option. More expensive in the short-term, though.

  • Nope, no crib. My bed has always been his bed.

  • No PNP, either. Lol

  • I would try to wait until you move. In my experience, I was unsuccessful night weaning until we moved her entirely out of our room. With her crib in the room, she would just stand up and cry until we picked her up and tucked her in with us. Once she got her own room she started sleeping through the night almost immediately.

So, DS goes down for the night around 7-8, and wakes up usually 3 or 4 hours after that, screaming and really upset, only to be consoled by nursing back to sleep (or if I have a buzz, I just deal with the tantrum and he'll eventually let me rock him back to sleep in a position similar to nursing).

I wonder if having him in his own room would make that much of a difference since he's so used to sleeping alone during that first stretch as it is...

  • I would def look on craigslist and in your situation I would go right to twin or even bigger (whatever size you plan on using long term).  And it may be easier to just start with the mattress on the floor, and that would save some money.

We will be getting a toddler bed for DD because we want to get a loft bed for the long term since her room is tiny. But she won't be able to use that for a few years, so it makes sense to get a toddler bed frame since we already have the mattress, protective covers, sheets and things, then buy the whole loft set/big mattress/new bedding together in a few years when she's older.  But that doesn't make sense for you since you don't already have anything.

E usually slept the first couple hours on her own as well. For her, it was definitely being in a separate room that made the difference. Even now, on the rare occasion she sleeps in our bed, she will wake up several times during the night asking for a drink. In her room she stays asleep until morning.

  • I really appreciate everyone's input. I might look into getting just a twin mattress and trying to find room for it on the floor now. Or maybe I'll just wait.

Either way, that'll be the transition we make when we move. Plus, it just occurred to me that he's probably going through an 18 month wakeful period...

  • We have a two bedroom apartment so we bought DS (2.5yo) a twin bed when we moved. It will last him longer than a toddler bed and can double as a guest bed if we need it.

  • @jesuisfatiguee, we got a toddler bed off of a local buy/sell/trade FB site for $30 and we have been using it since June. He does really well in it (thought maybe since our bebe's are the same age you might like to know). I understand not wanting to spend money on a toddler bed and then a big boy bed later like a twin but if the money was right, it might not be a bad thing.

  • I'm just not sure how to night wean whilst bedsharing. I've noticed with him it gets to a point in the wee hours that he becomes a cling-monster and fights if I try to unlatch. Then if I'm rocking him once finally getting him off the boob, he will NOT let me lay him down.

I'm talking 4-5 in the morning, guys. I don't want to start my day that early. Ever.

I am killing it at this parenting thing.

    Is he daytime weaned?
Sort of. We nurse in the morning in bed and then sometimes a bit more before leaving. I won't let him nurse in the evening until bedtime, though.

On weekends I've been lazy (and tired) so I'll nurse him down for naps and just stay in bed to nap myself.
