Who lets a 9 year old fire an Uzi? Jesus...I mean, I think that if you have guns in the house, at a certain age your kids should be trained on how to safely deal with them, but an Uzi? Christ.
I am 100% for teaching kids how to safely use firearms ESPECIALLY when there are weapons in the house but this is just idiotic. A 9 year old does not have the strength or control to use a fully automatic gun and it's stupid that they thought this was ok.
I know I am a broken record on this -- but everyone is a "responsible gun owner" until they do something dumb. The parents letting the 9 year old do this is all the proof you need to realize they aren't "responsible gun owners".
It's why I am all for a big federal tax payer funded network that oversees who can have a gun. "Raging dipshit parent" doesn't show up on a background check.
Yup, all of this. Well said.

I don't feel sorry for this instructor at all. He made a terrible choice that cost him his life. Every adult involved in this situation should be charged.
That's tragic. Gun safety for a 9 year old is more along the lines of "assume every gun is loaded and don't touch it" rather than "here's how you handle an uzi". In my opinion anyway. That poor little girl.
I just can't. Way to fuck up a child for life idiot parents. Congrats. Somebody needs to sue her parents and the range owners on her behalf to make sure there are funds for all the therapy.
Interesting thread to follow! I'm in Canada where we as adults have never come near a gun...so when I read this article yesterday I was thinking what the heck...I knew Americans view guns very differently than us...but a 9yr old with a loaded automatic as a teaching tool?
Glad to see that most all of you (whom I assume are in the US) also see that as wrong!
I truly hope this child is able to understand that her actions were largely the adults mistake here and not hers. What a thing to have to grow up with, knowing you killed someone...because adults gave you a weapon they should have known you could not have controlled.

I mean, I know other parts of the country are different, but how this doesn't warrant opening a case with CPS I have no idea.
Hell if I know. I mean, don't get me wrong, I live in a state where 7 year olds hunt...but even we think this is nuts! I think 7 year olds hunting is crazy too for the most part.
The more shit I hear the more in favor of regulation I am. My friend just told me the story of how her neighbor's 35 year old daughter was visiting on Father's Day, brought her gun to show her dad and accidentally fired it. The bullet went flying though my friend's house and lodged in the wall 10 feet from where her 3 kids were playing. And this is in a nice neighborhood. They never had issues when they lived on the military base, where there were far more weapons around, because people were trained and knew how to handle their firearms.
Actually, most bases are incredibly restrictive regarding firearms.
This range allows accompanied children to handle weapons? So what the fuck were her parents doing when she was holding a full fire auto weapon? Oh that's right. Recording it on their phones. Instead of intructing her what to do. Brilliant.
Edit- she shouldn't have has an Uzi to start with. I hope the range, & her parents get some backlash for this. Poor kid.

Only some Americans are supportive of gun ownership. Certainly not all and most support more regulation than is currently in place (even those I know from this board who own guns and claim to be responsible owners are supportive of more oversight).
This poor girl will have to carry this around with her for the rest of her life. I hope DYFS (NJs child services division) gets involved and suspect they will. No responsible parent takes a child who isn't familiar with gun safety to operate a fucking Uzi.
I definitely feel that children who live in a home with guns do need to learn about safety, but operating an Uzi is not safe.

I am of the opinion that outside of the military there is no need for anyone to even have access to this type of weapon. I'm o.k. with gun ownership for hunting, but you don't need a submachine gun to kill a deer.

Bow and arrow, yo.
So I know somebody who bow hunts and got chased by a wild pig after pissing one off...that is fair hunting.
I'm pretty sure he's there for the bourbon and steak afterwards.
I would totally just join everyone for bourbon and steak later then. Kind of like how I'll go to a camp site for a bit then either go home or to a hotel to sleep...
DH hunts with his friends to hang out with his friends, it's a bonding thing.
Gotcha. Even for bonding I totally will skip half the thing if I don't enjoy it . But will always gladly meet up for dinner and drinks. My friends all laugh at me because I'm so not outdoorsie even a little!

LOL I like outdoors, like drinking on a patio.
That's my kind of outdoors too lol! I like to hang out on my front porch in the evening as long as it's not too hot, not too cold, not buggy and not humid. And I have a glass of wine in my hand...
WTF. I was trying to contribute to the quote tree and got a quote box full of coding jargon.
Anyway, see if I ever invite you people to go traipsing through the woods with me.
We will meet you after for drinks . And we'll bring plenty of booze for said playdate!
I grew up with a licensed shooting range and gun shop in my back yard. My first shots from a .22 came at the tender age of 8. I LOVE the 2nd Amendment with the flag flying high. I hate bow hunting because I've had to shoot one too many deer during gun season with an arrow sticking out of them from a non-lethal shot with gangrene (ONE is too many!). I've shot deer with one shot with confidence at 600 yards to the amazement of others hunting with me. That said - my kid is going to learn to master the bow before she will ever be allowed to, after proper safety instruction and supervision, fire a weapon. She will also have bow as part of the curriculum at her school this year. I do not allow her, just as our family rules have been for decades to be anywhere near anyone shooting on my parent's range until they are old enough to demonstrate their respect for the weapon and safety of themselves/others. Whether she ever chooses to hunt or not at the age of 11 WILL be attending Hunter's Safety because it is a life lesson, and potentially life-saving lesson in a crisis situation, to know how to disarm a weapon. A youth around the age of 11/12, having taken proper firearms safety courses, AND PASSED both the book and practical, I would have no problem with them on the range with me. A 9yo with proper instruction and supervision using a small weapon (BB Gun or .22) with the same parameters would also not bug me.
That said - WHAT A EFFING MORRON to all of the adults involved in this situation!!! Unless it's Ted Nugent's 9-year old who has been shooting since the tender age of 4 with proper supervision and instruction in gun safety and most of all EXPERIENCE, does a 9-yo kid need to be given free range without proper life-time instruction with an Uzi! I am 100% in favor of a prosecutor charging these adults with negligence! They NEGLECTED their DUTY on so many levels! I know a lot of gun fanatics that can make my head bend and tilt in all sorts of directions, and not a ONE of them would do something so stupid and irresponsible as these idiots did! Who positions themselves near the business end of a weapon, let alone an UZI!?!?! <Deep Breath> Darwin at its finest!!!!

To me, this shit is awful. It mixes guns and entertainment and that is gross.
