Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Colic and screaming - When nothing works, what do you do?

What do you do after nothing has worked to soothe a colicky baby who won't stop screaming from gas pain?

The Simethicone seems to do nothing and the pharmacy is ordering probiotics.

It's at the point where he HATES being swaddled. Things like the swing and car seat and driving him make it worse because he is not being held. The only thing that stops him from screaming too much is being held close, burping him and cycling his legs. He is only three weeks old and sometimes I feel he is miserable.

He is 3 weeks, 2 days and screams off and on for about 8-12 hours a day.

He sees the doctor again Thursday for a follow-up. Anything I can ask or do?

Re: Colic and screaming - When nothing works, what do you do?

  • P.S. He is breast fed. I don't eat much dairy and nothing out of the ordinary.
  • Loading the player...
  • P.S. again. We keep him upright after feeding, burp him as much as he will burp. Is it true that they outgrow at 4-6 months?

I just feel so horrible. After four hours of him constantly screaming in pain, it breaks my heart...

  • Try Gripe Water..you can get it at any pharmacy or walmart.  Also sometimes a bath helps temporarily.  sometimes a warm heating pad or one of those bean bags that you warm in the microwave...put it on the belly. My first was colicy and i hear seeing a chiripractor really helps...if i have another like that i would def. try that! good luck !

  • And they do outgrow it eventually.  I remember being a zombie those few months.  It does break your heart.  One day you just realize that it hasn't happened in a few days and they are good from then on! But, I had read that colicy babies take a lot longer to get regular sleeping patterns and much longer to sleep through the night.  It was very true for us, he didn't sleep through the night till he was 2 and struggled with naps and nighttime.  But the catch up to other kids eventually!

  • I lived with a colicky baby for 6 months. What helped us the most was sitting on a yoga ball and bouncing him while holding a paci in his mouth. He also liked it when we held him close and bounced up and down while swaying back and forth.

  • My friend who had a colic baby would bounce him lightly on her knees and he really liked sleeping upright on his boppy! Hope it helps!

  • Get a sling or baby carrier. Many studies stipulate that carried babies cry less.

It normally gets better around 3-4 months. Hang in there. I promise it gets better.

My first daughter had terrible colic. We brought her to the pedi for uncontrollable crying I don't know how many times. My husband missed work bc I could not cope with screaming baby 24/7. She got better after 12 weeks. While I cannot predict the same outcome for your LO, it's pretty consistent in the literature that things get brighter at 3 months.

  • PLay this I swear it works. My baby stopped crying almost instantly. Trick is, you have to play it louder than your baby is crying. I also plan on making a CD of this to keep in the car.

  • We use gripe water, a tight swaddle using the miracle blanket (its the only one that DS can stand to be in), and white noise (we usually do a "Sounds of the mothers womb teddy bear) ... it works wonders with my DS.

Also, we changed to a sensitive formula... I know this is not an option for you but on the dr sears website, there is a list of foods that cause colic in breastfeeding mothers... here is a link.

  • Have you tried laying him on his belly for a few minutes and see if the pressure will make the gas move? I was about to pull my hair out with my lo's gas, finally i just put him on his belly and it was like magic. I also found this stuff at cvs called Colic Calm. The liquid is black and smells like licorious, but it does the trick instantly.  Good Luck!

  • Ask your pedi about Acid Reflux. DS was exactly like you described starting at three weeks as well. We took him in for his 2 month wellnes check and told the Dr. and he was prescribed some medication for Acid Reflux. It has worked fantastically! DS has been on the medication for just two weeks now, and we saw a difference within a few days. Also, mommy's bliss gripe water works great for upset tummys. I usually give DS his water after his medication. Anyway, it would be worth asking about!

Sorry....I'm lurking.  With my first I wore him (we used a moby wrap) all.the.time.  It was the only time he wasn't screaming.  It helped me keep my sanity.  He would sleep in there while I went about my business.  Once he was asleep in the moby I could even sit down.

  • The white noise that pp suggested works great. I used to turn on a hair dryer and that noise would quiet Lo immediately.

  • I'm not saying that these aren't good suggestions, but I want you to know, that if they don't work, its not you.  DS had and now DD has TERRIBLE colic.  Just like you stated, she would cry for hours and hours and hours all.day.long.  Like a PP mentioned, DH would some times have to come home from work because it was so bad and I couldn't do it and take care of DS at the same time.  With DS, people would tell me to swaddle, play white noise, etc and each time something didn't work, I felt like such a failure.

DS is the smartest, most fun, lighthearted 2 year old I know.  Your LO, and my DD, will come out of this some day  and be just fine.  Its just AWFUL right now and so so hard.  I totally understand.

What probiotic are you getting?  We have DD on Baby Biogaia and I do really think it has helped some (though she still has her moments for sure).  Good luck!!

This is probably a dumb question, but could it be something simple and fixable and not colic at all? My LO fussed all the time for the first 3 weeks of his life. I thought he was gassy or colicky, but it turned out I wasn't producing enough milk for him, and he was just hungry. Once we figured that out and were able to make sure he got enough to eat, he stopped crying. He's like a totally different baby now.

  • I've been doing the 5 S's from "The Happiest Baby on the Block" for a few days whenever Will seems to be inconsolable. When nothing else will work, it does for him.

    Swaddling, Side/Stomach, Shhhh, Swinging, Sucking.

Wrap him up tight, get him on his side or stomach, make a loud "Shhh" noise (he has to be able to hear it over his crying, otherwise it won't work. As he quiets, you can lower the noise, too.), jiggle/bounce/rock him (should be done vigorously, but not violently), offer him a pacifier (if you use one), or your breast.

I'm not sure if it will help your LO or not, but it might be worth it if nothing else has been working.

  • Thank you all so much for your encouragement. It means so much. We have tried everything, and literally I mean looking at every remedy we can find online.

Last night we tried multiple times and he would not take a pacifier. He screamed and spit it out. We do the belly time for about 5 minutes throughout the day. He tries to crawl but because he can't, it frustrates him too much and I'm afraid he'll start an episode.

The one great thing you all said is he will get through this. I'm hoping it will be gone within a few months. We're at a military installation so every time we go in, we see a different doctor, which I'm so thankful for - because they all have different opinions and offer something new. They've looked for any medical problems and I'll keep asking to make sure it's not anything else.

When he is not upset, he is a perfect angel. It's just with this colic, I am so tired I have to stay home, and am completely exhausted and drained. Sometimes I will sit in a chair with my eyes closed with him and try to pat him while he screams :(

My angel that I hope feels better.

I am Korean, and he is 1/2 white.

  • We had a terrible time the first 7 weeks of my son's life.  He was miserable no matter what.  Now, he's awesome at 15 weeks.  For us, it was changing his formula.  I stopped breast feeding after the first month, and was just using formula.  The one that worked for him is called Similac Allimentum.  It breaks down the milk protiens for them since their digestive systems aren't developed.  It was a miracle!

There are a couple of things that it could be that aren't colic related ( I think colic is way over diagnosed).  1.  Maybe he is still hungry.  I know this is hard to hear if you are breast feeding, but it takes some time to get your groove with breast feeding at first, and maybe he's not getting enough, yet.  You could try to give a little formula.  We had to do this in the beginning, as I wasn't producing much milk at first.

    2.  Gas drops, and gripe water can help.  I used both.  It did seem to help a little bit.

    3.  Maybe something in your diet.  I know you said you aren't eating anything weird, but check with your pedi, it could be dairy.

It seems like you are in hell right now, but it gets better, I promise.  I can't even believe I am here telling you this because we just went through it and I thought it would go on forever.  Just hang in there.  Your little angel will start coming out more and more as the weeks move on and his body becomes more mature and used to all this crazy new stuff going on.

  • YES!  Go out and get the Happiest Baby on The Block DVD!  It's AWESOME.  Very good soothing techniques that saved us many many  times!!!!
  • We run the vacuum....good luck to you!

  • My lo is 8 weeks and he's developed colic & reflux after HV not being very helpful I put him on lactose free milk n the change was instant but he has been having bouts of screaming this last few days not sure if it's jabs colic or constipation he has gaviscon and I have just bought colic calm so hopefully it will work like all testimonials say
  • get colic calm its the nuts   https://www.coliccalm.co.uk/
  • Follow the 5 Ss of doctor Karp he is amazing, the writer of the happiest baby on the block, you can check his method on youtube i tried it and it works like magic. Swaddle, side or stomach, shush, swing or side rockibg, and sucking works like magic everytime. Gas drops did nothing for me i tried all of them but this calms my baby and relaxes me look him up you will be amazed. Colic is not the result of gassiness i'm a believer now that am reading his book and saw my baby react and saw the videos

  • My son had horrible gas. The only thing that worked was holding him/wearing him and doing a funky dance around the family room. I probably looked awesome.

  • Have you tried Dentinox drops?? I used infacol with my LO but after a week I'm sure it wasnt working as well so i am using the drops now and so far so good (praise be to god!!) its so heartbreaking when nothing works. theres not much we can do for them. Have you read up on something called SILENT REFLUX? It could be that? xx hope things calm down xx hang in there
  • My second son cried for six solid months. It does get better, eventually! What helped him was patting...non stop back patting. He had to be being patted at all times.
  • Gerber colic drops. They are probiotics for babies. This helped so much. It took about a week for them to really kick and regulate the tummy. Also carrying the baby in a wrap. I have the solly wrap. Taking the baby outside always calms my baby down also. Good luck!
