I invited a friend and her kids over for a play date. It was late afternoon (3:00) so I pulled out a bottle of wine. She was horrified that I was going to drink in front of the kids. I figured we would each enjoy a glass...not get rip roaring drunk while the kids fend for themselves. She's not a new friend so I was surprised, I figured she would enjoy some wine. Would you be horrified if you were my friend?
Wait, what? We used to plan Friday afternoon wine playdates all the time! My kids see DH and I have wine or beer with dinner a few times a week, too. I don't get rip roaring drunk pretty much ever (once in the past 18 months) and never in front of my kids, but I think it's fine to have a glass or two. I think it models responsible use of alcohol instead of drinking just to get drunk.
That is strange. Maybe she just associates drinking with being shit faced? I always have a glass of wine (or beer) when I get together with friends. The only time I would say no is if I was driving or something. Heck, my neighborhood drinks almost nightly in the cul de sac while our kids play...FFC?

I wouldn't be horrified. However, once I was at a soccer playdate and the host got schnockered. She was hugging on all the moms and leaning on everyone. It was uncomfortable since I didn't know her very well. Made me think maybe she was an alcoholic. No problem with a glass or two but there is a such thing as excessive. Wanna get hammered, then get a babysitter.
Would I be horrified? Not at all. I prefer to drink after I have dinner, but the neighbor mom's on both sides of our house will pull out a glass of wine while all the kids are playing. Doesn't bother me at all.
I used to have a standing Fun Friday play date with some girlfriends. One of us would provide the house and another would provide the wine. I love play dates with booze.

I probably would have declined, but I would not have been horrified. I have a pretty low tolerance and some wines make me sleepy. 3pm is just a little early for me.
However, I frequently have wine with dinner in front of my kids, and parties with my dad's family often involve free flowing wine and beer.
We have a play date tomorrow at 10 am. I made sangria. But I know the two other moms won't judge me since they asked if they could bring any alcohol lol. I told them I had it taken care of! Weird that she judged you. I mean a glass of wine is the benefit to play dates.
This thread makes me so excited to not be pregnant anymore.
In the winter I'd walk with dd to a neighborhood spot on evenings that dh was traveling for work, she'd have mac and cheese, I'd have a salad and a good beer and I did think to myself sometimes is this inappropriate. I suppose it's getting off on a tangent and the whole kids in restaurants thing, but basically I'm on your side!
When is your next playdate? I'm putting it on my calendar ;-) I feel like playdates are the equivalent of book club but for people with kids. There had better be wine, and some kind of treat that I feel totally guilty eating!
I don't drink, total teetotaler .. SIL drinks ... But she gets the epitome of MORTIFIED at the thought of her/BIL drinking in front of their kids. Me OTOH, I think it's actually healthy if parents drink in any situation to teach their kids about "one glass in moderation for special events". Same goes for having a ultra-large milk shake - it's not something you indulge in daily/weekly, but on special occasions or such, one is o.k. in moderation.
IMO, there are probably a million other ways your friend could have said "no"... I have friends who drink quite a bit but they also teach their kids about moderation, situational appropriateness (they aren't going to get into a car after they've had anything), etc. Ultimately, those who have those lessons taught tend statistically to be less likely to binge come the college years. I learned I could be around alcohol without indulging, then after my first college party realized "hey, I can have just as much fun as they are - and NOT have a headache the next day!!! (I also had 6mo in a neck brace because of a drunk driver to drive this home long before any situation could present itself)...
Oh and can I tell you about my neighbour? He is a single guy, he forgot Halloween candy so he gave out beer lol! It was awesome!
LOL - every parent in one small town around here knows this guy! And every parent makes sure to stop on TorT night!!! (he now has water for those who don't partake!)

Yup, this. Well, we just have a few neighbors, but there are a few other kids and one of the perks is that we can all hang out and drink while the kids run around unsupervised. Wait....what?
I agree if I had to drive I might pass, just because of my low tolerance. Tomorrow our play date starts at 10 and they will be here all day. We have long play dates, usually at least 4 hours which I know isn't the norm.
I have no problem w/ moderate drinking around kids. Heck just last weekend DH and I met friends at their church festival and the four of us were chasing toddlers w/ beers in hand.
For play dates, it honestly never crossed my mind. Of course play dates right now are usually early in the morning and I have at least one child clinging to me most of the time so not the most conducive to wine-drinking....coffee flows freely, however
Horrified is over-the-top, seriously. She could have just politely declined. I see nothing wrong with having a drink or two with your kids around. It teaches them responsible alcohol consumption.
