Increased amniotic fluid at a/s scan

Everything went well with my u/s, except that they said there was more amniotic fluid than there should be, which could indicate a chromosomal problem. I had the Pamorama test done that came back normal, but I need to decide by this week if I want to proceed with the amniocentesis. I am a worrier, so I really want to get a definite answer, which the amnio does, but there is a slight chance of miscarriage with the procedure. Has anyone else had increased amniotic fluid? I need advice ASAP! Thanks everyone :)

  • My friend had high levels of fluid for both of her pregnancies. Her girls are fine. If it's going to cause you a lot of worry and stress for the next 20 weeks, I'd get the amnio. Personally, I don't think I would since your previous test results were good.

  • I wouldn't do it.  The harmony test is supposed to be pretty accurate, right?  I would find it hard to believe it missed something.

  • What kind of chromosomal problems?   How would they affect you and your partner--if it turns out the baby has DS (one chromosomal problem of many), would you terminate?  Find out what the test can determine, and then make your choice based on what you and DH would do.

I have a friend who didn't want any tests because nothing would cause her to terminate.  I have another friend who got the amnio because she would have terminated if something was seriously wrong.  To each her own, but find out what the chromosomal problems could be, and make a decision based on that.

  • I would not terminate, but I still would like to know so that I am prepared. But I am not willing to risk a miscarriage to do so. The other tech in the room said that it could also be a sign of gestational diabetes. But from what I've read on these boards and online, it could also turn out to be nothing. Thanks for your replies everyone!

  • I don't know what I would do in your situation except that the amnio scares me!  Best of luck in whatever you decide - I hope it's absolutely nothing!

  • I would pass considering everything else was okay. Good luck with whatever you choose!
